6 Great Home Uses for Power Pressure Washers
September 23rd, 2009 | Clean, Handy Man, Tools
Power pressure washers are handy pieces of equipment for home use, and some models are made for commercial use, as well. Unless you plan on running a pressure washing business, however, you can get away with a relatively inexpensive piece of equipment that can you use to do a large variety of things around the house. Washing tasks that once took a long time can be zipped through with power pressure washers.
When you're looking for a home model, you can choose between electric or gas-powered. Electric power pressure washers cost less, run more quietly and are lighter. But they also can't produce the same powerful pressure that a gas model can. For many people, this is all right. If you've ever used a hand-held spray at a car wash, then you've used a pressure washer with about 700 PSI, or pounds of pressure per square inch. You can get a nice electric pressure washer for your home that offers more cleaning power at 1,000 or 1,500 PSI that's suitable for regular tasks.
Gasoline power pressure washers can be purchase for the home from about 2,000 to 3,000 PSI. The higher PSI models are similar to low-end commercial washers and must be used with care because they can do damage to objects and people. Gas washers are more powerful, so they cut through tough jobs like cleaning the bottoms of boats, in no time. They also produce fumes, so must only be used outdoors. They're more expensive, and they make a lot of noise. Choose a pressure washer that most closely matches the uses you have in mind.
Here are some of the cleaning chores around your house that are perfect for power pressure washers:
- Clean or redo your deck. Hosing off your deck gets rid of loose surface dirt, dust and debris. But a pressure washer can get rid of deep down dirt that, once removed, can lighten the wood by a shade. If you're ready to stain or reseal your deck, use your pressure washer to help strip away the old wood sealer to prepare it for new.
- Your sidewalks, garage floor and driveway can stay looking fresh and clean with a pressure washer. A solvent like TSI will break down the molecules in old grease and oil stains, and the pressure washer will blast them away.
- A brick or stone patio, deck or walkway is the perfect project for power pressure washers. Addition of a mildew remover can make a dramatic difference in appearance if you have problems with mildew.
- Wash your car. Very high PSI models must be used with care on everything, so it's best to use a lower pressure unit on a car, to avoid denting or other problems. With a home washer, you'll never need to drive to the car wash again.
- Clean your windows. No more climbing a ladder.
- Clean gutters and downspouts too; all without climbing a ladder.
