Basic Tools – A Home Repair Guide
September 17th, 2009 | Handy Man, home improvement
Anyone who has had to hire someone to perform a simple home repair for them knows that it’s just not worth it. Repair services charge a lot to fix even the most basic problems, and if you have a major issue then it’s that much worse. Many people have been looking for a good home repair guide that will tell them everything they need to know about do it yourself home repairs. While it’s too broad a topic to cover in any one article, there are some important basics that a lot of guides out there skip.
One of the basics that every home repair guide ought to include is an explanation of the basic tools that every do it yourself should have access to. A lot of people decide to try and handle their own repairs without having the slightest clue what kind of tools they should have or how to use them.
You may not need a home repair guide to tell you about the basics – hammers, screwdrivers, and wrenches. The key piece of advice when it comes to these basic tools is to make sure that you buy quality and variety. The hammer should above all be sturdy – you don’t want the head falling off when you go to whack something. As far as screwdrivers and wrenches go, there’s nothing more frustrating than starting a project and realizing you don’t have the right size. Buy a large set of screwdrivers and wrenches so you have all the angles covered.
One thing that people don’t necessarily consider a tool is the flashlight. While you don’t technically need to perform any repairs, unless you can see in the dark you’ll find it very useful. Many home repair guides fail to consider that many repairs take place in enclosed spaces where light can’t really get to. In those situations, a flashlight is a lifesaver.
Another important basic tool is a good set of pliers. Again, sturdiness and variety are key – although you can kill two birds with one stone by getting a big pair of adjustable pliers. You should also get a smaller pair of pliers with a narrow end so that you can work in tight spaces. A pair of pliers with a wire cutter built in is something you should also add to your collection.
One of the most common problems that will arise in a home is problems with the plumbing. For that reason, this home repair guide recommends that you have a good plunger. In fact, you may want to get both a sink plunger and a toilet plunger so that you have all your bases covered. You may be surprised how many plumbing problems can be fixed by thorough plunging.
This covers most of the absolute basics that you’d need to start a home repair project. It’s a good list for a beginner. Depending on just how complicated the projects you’re working on are, you may need to get a lot more tools, and more complex, powerful and expensive ones at that.
