Circular saws are excellent tools, and are perceived to be one of the most common tools that you will find within a workshop. The circular saw was originally invented back in the year 1780. The circular saw is also regularly regarded as the Skil saw or the buzz saw, but the Skil saw is just a type of circular saw and not actually another name for the tool itself. When you use the proper blade for your needs, a circular saw is more than capable of cutting ceramic tile, wood, steel and masonry projects. Circular saws come in a wide variety of different sizes from 3 inches to 16 inches. The most common size for corded circular saws is 7 ¼ inches, and for cordless varieties the most common sizes are 5 3/8 inches and 6 ½ inches. There are two different categories of circular saws, and these are in line circular saws and worm drive circular saws.
In-Line Circular Saws - This is the most common variety of circular saws, and they also tend to be the least expensive of all circular saws as well. They do not generally weigh as much as your average worm drive circular saw will. The motor of the in-line circular saw sits in a perpendicular manner to the blade, and there is also a shaft that runs directly from that motor in order to drive the blade. The in-line style of circular saws is going to best suit many different applications, and these circular saws are actually relatively maintenance free if you do not consider having to change the blades for different projects.
Worm Drive Circular Saws - Worm drive circular saws are ideal for heavy duty use, and they tend to cost a little bit more in comparison to in line circular saws. Worm drive motors are positioned in a parallel manner with the blade, and they make use of a gear in order to increase the amount of torque that is transferred to the blade. These are going to generally be a little bit heavier than your traditional in line model circular saw. Worm saws also tend not to be maintenance free in general, meaning that you are going to occasionally need to add a special kind of oil to the motor. Luckily, all that this involves is unscrewing your screw and then adding in the oil, so it is relatively easy in general.
Choosing the right type of circular saw for the purpose you intend it for is vitally important because it means making sure that you have a circular saw that is going to suit the project and your own working capabilities as well. Knowing the difference between worm drive circular saws and inline circular saws is only the beginning when it comes to understanding the capabilities of different circular saw varieties.
