It is a problem that has happened to all of us. You go in for a hot shower, only to find that there is no more hot water. You have come to the decision it is time to replace you hot water heater with one that has more capacity. The problem is that larger hot water heaters consume more energy, which will definitely have an impact upon your utilities bill. What you should be considering is a tankless water heater. Much like on demand service offered by TV providers nowadays, these heat the water only when it is needed. So you are not paying to keep many gallons of water at a high temperature. Further, these devices free up storage space, and can qualify for tax credits due to their energy saving nature.

Now everything has its limitations and compromises, and you should take them under consideration. Different models will draw upon different sources of power in heating the water, some electric, some gas. Different models will have varying scopes of application; where some might be attached to where they will be used, others will attach and provide for the whole home. The size of unit does determine the capacity for water usage. There are a number of different things that should be considered before you make the change.

Surprisingly enough, the tankless water heater has no tank. It creates hot water as required without storing any excess. This results in no loss from hot water being stored, and is the primary source of the claim of energy efficiency. These heaters take in cold water and is heated by a heating element, much like the water you put into a water heater. The source of heat can be gas, electric, propane. Gas and propane can typically heat much more than electric, and are suited for whole house units. What determines the capability of the water heater is the temperature of the cold water, the temperature of the desired hot water, and the flow of water.

Whole house heaters have a larger flow of water and can handle more than one faucet in the home. Different fixtures need different amounts of flow, as a shower head can use 5 or 6 times more water than a sink. When it comes time to determine the type, size and numbers of heaters that you will need, you will need to think of how many hot water sources will likely be on at a time, and the total flow you may need. You will also need to consider the region you live in, since farther from the equator equates to colder climates and a colder baseline.

All of these factors need to go into the decision to get a tankless water heater. You should consider the over all energy gain of buying one, savings that you will receive in tax benefits and energy reduction, and compare it to the initial setup cost, and any limitations as to range of capability for the unit.

The under counter appliances in your kitchen are not complicated to install or replace, and can easily be handled by the homeowner. All it takes is a few steps that are simple to perform.

The first step in replacing a built in washer is to remove the old one. Removing it is a matter of pulling the unit out and disconnecting it. Before doing this, there are some steps to take to ensure you do not damage the surrounding fixtures. First, lift the washer slightly and examine the underneath of the washer. If there are no rollers, then using furniture sliders will protect your kitchen floor as you pull the unit out. You should also switch the breaker to the unit before pulling the appliance out. At this point, you should gently pull the unit out, keeping an eye to the rear of the unit to ensure you do not pull the unit past the length of the hose hookups. When you have pulled the unit out, you will have access to the power cord, which you should unplug the washer.

At this point, you should turn off the water lines to the washer. The hook up will be under the sink or behind the washer. Once the water is turned off, place a bucket or tub behind the washer, under the hoses where they are hooked up. Undo the hoses, placing the ends into the tub to collect the water remaining in the hoses. Once the hoses are drained, disconnect them from the other hookup, and remove the washer the rest of the way. At this point, check under the counter to address any issues, making sure all of the hardware is in repair and there is no apparent water damage.

At this point, assess the quality of the old washer. If it remains in good condition, and is still in working order, then you can sell it to a refurbishing establishment, allowing you recuperate some of your costs. Else there are places which will buy old appliances for scrap and parts. It will not provide as much money, but can still help. Before removing the washer, make sure to drain any water left in the washer into the bucket. There will be a fixture for this in the rear of the washer, so do not risk damage or injury by tipping the appliance.

After you remove the old appliance from your kitchen, bring in the new one. Read the manual to see if there are any special steps that are required to install the new washer. Make sure all of the hookups are clear and clean, and that any protective items are removed from the appliance. Check the hoses to see if they are still usable. Look for signs of extra stiffness, cracking or wear that is indicative of damaged hoses. If the hoses are still good, install them and plug in the washer. Having placed sliders under the new washers, ones that you will be alright with leaving in place, turn the water back on, checking for leaks, and move the unit back into place. Run a test load to ensure that the system works, and all that remains is to enjoy your new washer.

Given the world concern over energy efficiency, there are little steps that you can take to ensure that you are doing your part to minimize your energy use. The biggest source of energy drains in the home are your appliances, so it will improve things a lot to make sure your appliances are energy efficient.

The first step is to determine how energy efficient your appliances are. Examine the major electrical devices in every room and write down a list of the big devices. This include the refrigerator, washer, dryer, television, your iron or any device that creates a lot of heat or an AC unit. Once you have identified every appliance in your home, examine them to determine their age. Older appliances, especially those older than 4 or 5 years, were not created with energy efficiency in mind. Note those appliances as such and consider the cost to replace them if they are continuously on, such as for a refrigerator, or if they are only used intermittently like a heater, consider other alternatives to their use.

You should also take the time to identify those items which are continuously drawing power. The refrigerator can be the single most wasteful energy sink in the kitchen. In the living room and office, the television and computer can still be drawing a significant amount of power if they are in standby, especially newer flat panel televisions. If there is a light on, then the device is still drawing power. Make note of these devices as well on your list.

Once you identified the more obvious energy hogs, take the time to identify the less obvious by reading the labeling on the device. Energy Star devices, and most other devices produced in the past decade, come labeled with their power ratings, typically in watts. Watts is a measure of the electrical energy used by the device, so the lower the rating, the better. Record the wattage of all of the devices which you can easily identify.

At this point, you have gathered all of the information which can be gathered right away. There is more you can do to measure the energy usage of your products, however. That is to use a energy meter device which sits between the appliance and the wall socket. This device will measure in exact terms the wattage and energy use of an appliance. Use this device on all appliances for which you do not know the exact wattage for. Most devices are better measured over a week or so of normal use, since the meters will average the results over the time period of use. Take these numbers down as well.

Now that you have identified the major energy usages around the home, what can you do to lower the electric bill? While there are countless ideas out there, there are a couple simple things you can do. Continuous duty items, such as the refrigerator, can be adjusted to use less power by setting the thermostats to a little warmer that the absolute maximum (making sure the fridge is still below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and the freeze below 32 degrees). Devices which are intermittent in use, such as a television or computer, should be plugged into a power strip or surge protector. Not only will these devices protect your electronics, but when your electronics are not in use, you can switch the surge protector to ensure that they are not drawing electricity. When it comes time and the money is available, take you list and replace your appliances with ones with lower energy. It doesn't need to be difficult to make your home more energy efficient.

The modern home is just packed with appliances, big and small. From toasters to hairdryers to more esoteric appliances, it seems like there’s a gizmo for every task. The problem is that like any sort of technology, small appliances are prone to breaking for a variety of reasons. Most people have decided that the simplest solution to a broken appliance is to simply to buy a new one. Many appliances are cheap enough that this makes sense. However, if you want to save yourself a little cash, then small appliance repair isn’t too difficult for a dedicated do it yourselfer.

Ultimately, most small appliances fall into two basic categories: heaters and movers. A toaster, for example, is a type of heating appliance, while a blender is of the moving type. This is an oversimplification of course, but it serves to illustrate the point that most small appliances are quite similar in how they operate. Thus, small appliance repair isn’t as difficult or intimidating as it might first appear to be.

When trying to perform small appliance repair, the first step is to identify the problem. Usually, the problem will be either that a device that’s supposed to heat things doesn’t heat them, or a device that’s supposed to move things doesn’t move them. The problem in the first case is usually an electrical one, since small appliances typically use electricity to heat things. Electricity might also be the problem with a moving appliance, or there may be something blocking the device from moving.

If there is some kind of blockage in a moving appliance, this is usually the easiest type of small appliance repair to perform. Once you’ve identified the part that isn’t moving, simply ensure that the device is unplugged and then try to manipulate that part. You may be able to manually remove the blockage with a little bit of careful prying. You may need to take the device apart to get to the blockage. Don’t be afraid to use a bit of trial and error. So long as you’re careful not to damage any fragile parts, you can usually get the appliance working again.

Electrical problems can be more difficult to perform small appliance repairs on. This is largely because the problem is more difficult to diagnose. Any number of sections may be the source of electrical problem, from the external wiring to the internal connectors or even the switch that turns the appliance on. It can be tough to pinpoint exactly which part of the device is malfunctioning.

The best place to start with this sort of small appliance repair is to identify the symptoms. If the device works up to a certain point but then stops working, or it works but does so incorrectly, that can provide you with some clues. For example, if a toaster ends up burning the toast all the time, then the problem may be the thermostat. Once you have an idea of the symptoms, it’s easier to pinpoint the exact problem and learn how to perform that sort of small appliance repair.
