Although the book is relatively small, don't let its size fool you. There is a lot of information packed into its 166 pages. You'll find plenty of diagrams and illustrations to make the projects easier and overall the visual presentation is very impressive. Too many DIY books don't include enough of these, but chances are you won't be disappointed with this one.

Each chapter in the book deals with a specific type of trim or built-in. You'll start off however with project planning and this is an invaluable resource that will help any aspiring carpenter get their project laid out. You'll be able to map out absolutely everything you'll need to do and there are some great time saving tips in this section as well. The book even shows you how to draw your own designs and work from these plans, making it well worth the cover price.

Next, you'll be moving on to the different types of materials that trim can be made of. This is an interesting discussion and you'll learn a lot about the differences and which materials should be used for specific trim projects. If you're entirely new to trim, this is a very helpful chapter. However, even seasoned pros can get something out of it.

Windows are also covered and this is a fantastic chapter if you are trying to restore an older home and want to be able to mimic the trim and keep that old feel even though you are using new materials. You'll learn a lot about the process of designing, making and adding trim to your windows, both inside and out.

The chapters on baseboards and crown molding are also very useful and you'll get some really great time saving tips that can be used on your next project. If you find this type of carpentry difficult, and many do, you'll find out exactly what techniques you need to be using to pull off the job without a hitch. The section on wainscoting is incredibly useful if you are looking for a unique way to finish off a room and give its own unique character.

The next few sections deal exclusively with built-ins and you'll learn not only which materials are best suited for certain projects, but also how to build a basic bookshelf that is much safer than a freestanding model as well as how to make your own cabinets. Overall, this is a book that is well worth the read.

There are a number of advantages associated with water based wood fillers because they do not add the same heavy smells and fumes that solvent based wood putty materials do, and also because they are significantly easier to work with. What most wood workers seem to like the best about water-based wood putty products is how simple and easy they are to clean up. This form of wood putty is also quite economical when it comes to storage because it does not dry out nearly as quickly as the solvent based putties are capable of doing.

All wood putties are really just glue that is mixed with a material, such as gypsum or sawdust for example. What this does is creates a binder that allows the filler to be held together. Once you get used to working with different applications of wood putty, you will want to keep both types on hand for whenever you are working with wood, regardless of whether you are an avid wood worker or just mess around in the shop on the weekends. Wood filler is definitely an important item to have on hand when you work with wood, as it literally has a thousand different uses that will serve you well.

The Amish are not interested in so-called improvements. Amish furniture builders shy away from electricity-driven drills and saws. What this means is that their workmanship is the historical standard. Chances are the rare antique desks and chairs you've encountered in your life were made the same way the Amish make their pieces.

Does that mean in order for you to construct furniture your great-great grandchildren will see, you have to say goodbye to the power tools? Not necessarily. What you should be doing is studying the structure of Amish furniture. Understand the way in which the individual pieces were cut and fit into place, know what wood is used for what kind of piece, and at least appreciate the effort that goes into the construction when power tools are taken out of the equation.

There might be a reason why for one section of assembly power tools should be avoided. In the event of internal splintering this could be paramount in preventing long-term damage to an otherwise well-built piece of furniture. Studying Amish furniture construction can enable the craftsman who uses modern tools to realize when old tricks work best.

Many self-made wood pieces made by today's self-taught craftsman are based on modern designs and modern plans. This contributes to the cycle of replaceable furniture. Many designs call for cost-saving and effort-reduction. This cuts decades and even centuries off the life of a piece you construct yourself.

Have you ever looked at an antique piece and wondered about its story and its origins? One day you could be the anonymous builder on the other end of that musing. Or imagine being able to provide your future descendants with a dinner table years after you're long gone.

Building furniture wasn't always about the here and now. It was about investing time and effort into something that will turn into a family legacy. The first item on the list is a table saw.

This tool is vital to any wood shop. The table saw will not only size your pieces, but will also cut dados, rabbits, and other important tasks for the carpenter. This is the most sound investment that you can make as a carpenter. Try and get the best table saw that will fit within your budget. This tool will be used for almost every project. It should be reliable and durable.

The second tool that is key for the carpenter is the band saw.

This tool is considered to be the most underrated tool of the shop. The band saw can do a lot of the cutting that is necessary for wood working. It can cut and re-cut wood, rip wood, crosscut wood, make circles and cut joints.

The drill press is the third item that is necessary.

Drills not only cut the myriad of holes needed by the carpenter, but can be used to power screw wood screws and bolts, remove other items, and many other features. There are hand held drills, but what one should get is either a bench top or floor standing drill press. This allows for more accurate work.

The last big power tool is a router.

The router is a rotating bit mounted upright that can cut molding, route slots and designs, and cut complex curves. This tool can make very complicated designs in wood that can add a great flair to a wood working project.

There are also countless hand tools that are integral for a carpenter's workshop.

Basics such as hammers and mallets, screwdrivers and other mechanics tools are useful. For cutting tasks, chisels, saws and punches are helpful. Layout and measuring tools, such as squares and compasses are important to ensure that you can work accurately and precisely.

There are also accessories to get for the power tools listed. Drill bits for the drill, router bits, circular saw blades and other items are useful for the tools. It is also important to maintain the tools, using oil to prevent rust and housing tools in a tool case. Be sure to use tools that are in top condition, cleaning off rust and replacing broken bits and parts. Safety items should also be present, including a first aid kit and fire extinguisher. Cleanliness is vital to safety, so you should have a shop vacuum and plenty of brooms and brushes.

If there is any confusion, it can be helpful to ask a professional and learn from them. Make sure to buy good quality tools, and they will have a superior lifetime.

- Plan to peel away surface materials so that you can provide for secure attachment of your wall at the top, the bottom and the ends of the wall. If you cannot butt the wall into studs at the connecting wall, or if the wall does not fall directly beneath a joist in the ceiling, then you need to plan on installing nailing blocks between each framing piece when learning how to build a wall.

- To begin, you should mark the new wall's center line along the ceiling. At each end of this line, you should measure and mark half of the width of the top plate of the new wall in one direction. Place a stud at each of the ends from the end meeting the wall.

- On the floor you should lay the top plate and the bottom plate side by side, carefully measuring where each of the wall studs is going to do. Mark each with a perpendicular line across each plate. Make sure to use a combination square or similar measuring tool to ensure that the studs will align perfectly upon installation.

- Next you should locate the ceiling joists. Hold the top plate in position along the guide that you marked in the ceiling, nailing it in place using 3.5 inch nails.

- The next step is to hang a plumb bob from each of the top plate's ends up on the ceiling, marking the floor to establish where the bottom plate should rest below the top plate. Snap a chalk line along the floor between these marks to use as a guide for the edge of the bottom plate. Nail the plate into place using 3 inch nails, staggering them and spacing them out to every 16 inches or so.

- Now use stud framing clips to install each of the wall studs. Lift each of the studs into position, lining them up with their marks. Check plumb using a carpenter's level, and then nail each one into place.

- Where one wall intersects with another wall, you should double up on studs to receive the intersecting wall properly. If the wall turns a corner, you should frame it with two full length studs with blocks sandwiched in between them. Alternatively, you can also toenail each of the studs to the bottom and the top plates using 2.5 inch nails for good results.

These are the first steps to learning how to build a wall. From this point, you need to make some decisions about the type of wall you want to build before you proceed much further.
