If your home’s water is excessively hard, it may be time to think about purchasing a water softener. If you are not sure if you have hard water, there are a few easy tests that will help you determine this. First and foremost, you can send a sample to a lab, and this is probably the definitive answer to water hardness questions, but there are other signs that you can watch for.

Hard water is very common in rural homes where the water supply is not treated. However, some cities are notorious for their hard water. Look for calcium deposits in your toilet tank, stains around drains, as well as faucets and other telltale signs. You may also notice that it is impossible to get soap or shampoo to lather, which is another sign that your home has hard water.

Since hard water can do a lot of damage, many homeowners look to a water softener for relief. The first person to introduce the concept of “soft” water was Emmett Culligan, who found that it was beneficial not only for humans, but also for cattle. His early studies found that cattle given soft water were healthier and brought more money at auction.

Typically, salt is used to soften water. The water supply for your house is run through the softener, and the grains of salt help block the minerals that make the water “hard.” This does mean that some sodium does enter the water supply. For those on a sodium restricted diet, this can be troublesome.

There is one alternative to using salt in a water softener that relies on the use of potassium chloride, which is a salt substitute. While this may work for those that are on a sodium restriction, it should be noted that this type of salt substitute is not recommended for those suffering from Addison’s Disease or those that may have elevated levels of potassium in their blood.

Despite these issues, removing minerals from your water can lead to better health and you will begin to see benefits such as clothes getting cleaner, a lack of mineral build up in plumbing fixtures and you will of course have cleaner hair since your shampoo can now lather. If you don’t have any health issues with sodium or potassium chloride, a water softener can be incredibly beneficial.

When you are shopping for your new water softener, you will first need to see just how hard your water is. This is where your lab sample comes in. You can check with your county’s extension office for a free test, or your water treatment company may offer it free. Once you know how hard the water is, you can determine what size of softener you will need. In some extreme situations, a dual tank water softener may be necessary. This is common for large families or for those in rural areas where the water can be especially hard and will need extra treatment before it can be used.

If your showers are starting to feel more like a bath, thanks to the amount of standing water you have in your tub, it's definitely time to address some clogs. Bathtubs and showers have to deal with a lot of hair on a daily basis and it doesn't take much for a clog to appear. Even with the best maintenance, chances are you'll have to fight one or two every year.

There are a lot of different methods for cleaning a clogged drain, and we'll cover the ones that are most effective. However, since using drain cleaners is not only bad for the environment, but also for your health, we won't be covering that method. It is possible to end up with drain cleaner coming back up into your shower and the health risks from breathing the fumes are injurious to the health of your whole family. There are plenty of other easy ways to clean a clog that don't involve harmful chemicals.

Now, before we get started, you're going to need a few tools. We recommend:

a screwdriver

a pair of pliers

a coat hanger

a plumber's snake (for serious leaks - they're available at most hardware stores)

some gloves (if you don't want to get slimy)

First, you're going to have to remove the top part of your shower drain. Most are screwed in, so gently loosen that screw with the appropriate type of screwdriver. You're not going to want to crank on this since you can damage your tub. If it won't budge, try a little WD40 if necessary.

Once this top part is off you should be able to get a better idea of the kind of clog you're dealing with. Most clogs will be in this part of the drain, so you can simply pick the hair out until the area is cleaned up. If you don't see much hair or anything else clogging this area, you're going to have to go a little bit further. Most modern drains have a pattern inside that is made of hard plastic, so you can't exactly go sticking your hand down there. We don't recommend prying this part out since you can permanently damage your tub.

Unwrap that coat hanger and try feeding it gently down the drain. Probe around until you feel like you've hit the clog. You can try to pull it back up towards you or push it down further until it reaches a larger area of the pipe where it can be flushed away. For serious clogs we really recommend a plumber's snake since they are easier to use than a coat hanger. Get rid of the clog and then put the drain back together again and you're set.

If you have frequent clogs there's an easy little recipe that you can use to make safe drain cleaner. Get some baking soda and put it down the drain. Then, grab some white vinegar and pour it in. The chemical reaction will clean out the pipe and keep it clean for you. You can do this once a month as a preventative. After you use the mixture, run some hot water down the drain to flush away any excess power.

When you get your home inspected, any problems that are found mean that you have to fix them and get another inspection, at a greater cost to you. You can prepare to avoid that second inspection by learning what home inspectors consider to be the ten problems they most frequently find. A short prelude is to recognize that of the ten items, four relate directly to water and its damaging effects. It is then important that keeping water out should be at the forefront of the homeowner's consideration when it comes to home maintenance and repair.

1) Surface Drainage -

This problem is the most frequently cited problem that homeowners face. It is the back up or slower than standard drainage of surface water, and it is responsible for the number one household malady - water in the basement.

2) Electrical Wiring -

This common problem is the result of insufficient overload protection, insufficient electrical supply and home wired connections, which are potentially dangerous to occupants.

3) Roof -

This ailment is the result of degraded or damaged shingles, which causes roof leakage. Flashing that was improperly installed can also be a problem.

4) Heating -

This category includes such items as a defective, non functioning thermostat, chimney blockage, and an unsafe venting of exhaust away from the home.

5) Overall Maintenance -

This is where various areas of easy to repair items accumulate, such as makeshift fixes for wiring or plumbing, broken fixtures, cracked and peeling painted surfaces, and degraded masonry.

6) Structural Issues -

This category covers damage sustained by load bearing, structural components, such as the foundation, floor joists, rafters, support beams, headers around doors and windows, and much more.

7) Plumbing -

Plumbing problems rank high when it comes to issues of the home. This includes the presence of old and outdated materials, defective or damaged fixtures, problems with the septic system or sewer lines, and so forth.

 Exterior-

Problems with the exterior of the home, such as for doors, windows and outer surfaces, allow atmospheric heat and humidity penetration, although they do not have much of an impact on the overall structure. Caulking and weather striping are the usual suspects when it comes to issues of the exterior.

9) Ventilation-

It is frequently the case that individuals will over seal their home in an effort to have a more efficient air system. This results in the excessive build up of moisture, however, leading to rotting of structural elements.

10) Miscellaneous-

This catchall category covers cosmetic issues that were not cited enough to gain its own category.

The results of the survey are dependent upon the age of the home and the area it is located in. Homes in the desert do not have as strict regulations on rain protection than in Chicago for example. For the homeowner, it is important to go through the home and review various sections of the home in relation to these categories. They should avoid any self repairs if their skill level is not considered to be up to standards, especially when it comes to wiring and plumbing. Fix what you can before the inspection, and you may avoid having to do the same procedure twice.
