What it is:

CLR is an instant cleaner for plastic or resin, rattan, wicker, wood, wrought iron, vinyl, PVC, and canvas furniture. On top of that it is biodegradable and will not harm grass.

Other pluses:

It supposedly helps protect from fading and discoloration. It is supposed to inhibit mildew. It is also supposed to absorb ultraviolet light. And it is supposed to protect metal.

Before you start:

The directions say to test the product on an inconspicuous spot for color safety. I chose not to do this as my furniture was light.

What I did:

I used it today to clean 8 chairs and 2 tables. 1 bottle (26 fl oz) was not quite enough to do the job the way it needed to be done.

Granted my chairs were super dirty. They had not been cleaned since Easter. And they were outdoors under trees. My furniture was beige plastic.

How to use:

• Use rubber gloves.
• Spritz the furniture generously, then let it sit. I let it sit while I sprayed the next chairs. This loosens the dirt before you wipe it off.
• Then for woven surfaces, cushions or fabric use a soft bristled brush to finish cleaning.
• For smooth surfaces such as plastic, use a brush, cloth or sponge. I used a sponge.
• Finish by rinsing well.

My take:

I had to rub thoroughly (hard) on some areas that were especially dirty. It might have worked better and faster if I had used a brush.

For the most part, it worked very well. All the chairs, except for one, came quite clean. That chair appears to be stained. Perhaps a second application will take care of it.

Natural versus Synthetic Fabrics

Furniture can be upholstered in both natural and synthetic fabrics.  Natural fabrics are regarded as eco-friendly and are currently used frequently by interior decorators.  The types of natural furniture fabrics include:

• Cotton
• Cotton Blend
• Leather
• Linen
• Silk
• Wool

Synthetic fabrics are man-made.  They are manufactured to mimic natural fabrics; however, they contain no natural fibers.  They are ideal for people who have allergies.  Synthetic furniture fabrics include:

• Acetate
• Acrylic
• Microfiber
• Nylon
• Olefin
• Polyester
• Rayon
• Vinyl

Choosing a Furniture Fabric

Each type of fabric has specific characteristics and features making it sensible for use in certain situations.  It can be difficult for the average consumer to know exactly which fabric type to choose for which purpose, however.  So, here are four basic issues to consider when selecting a furniture fabric:

Style: It is important to keep the particular furniture piece in mind when choosing fabric.  In addition, the style of the room and home in which the furniture will be placed should be considered.  For instance, a traditional wood-framed couch likely wouldn’t look quite right if it were upholstered in a silk fabric.  Likewise, a chair being placed in a child’s room would look out-of-place if its fabric was formal linen.

Durability: When deciding on furniture fabric it is essential to think about the type of wear and tear that the piece will receive.  Furniture that will be in heavy traffic areas must be upholstered in hard-wearing fabrics that offer good stain resistance.

Thread Count: This refers to how tightly woven the fabric is—and, the higher the thread count, the better the fabric will last to daily wear and tear.  The actual number refers to the number of threads per square inch of fabric.

Color: This is probably the biggest reason why people select certain furniture fabrics; however, some fabrics may not be the best options for people who have pets or young children.  The color should be chosen after the particular fabric has been chosen.

A salesperson at a furniture store or fabric store will be able to describe which fabric types will work best in various furniture situations.  Don’t hesitate to ask questions about which furniture fabric types are recommended for people with children, or for people who have pets, or for formal living rooms, for example.  Salespeople simply want to sell the item (furniture or upholstery fabric); therefore, it is in their best interest to answer any and all questions completely and openly.  Be honest with the salesperson, and she will be able to direct you toward the best furniture fabric.

When choosing the products which you will used for refinishing your furniture, you should go with environmentally friendly products. A lot of refinishing will be done outdoors, and environmentally friendly products will reduce the impact that refinishing will have on the planet. You should choose products which highlight the beauty of the wood, such as natural finishes. More drab or dull looking woods and furniture pieces can benefit from a gloss finish. Natural products also restore the natural beauty of wood. There is a lot of work involved in refinishing furniture, but it is worth the effort in cost savings. It should be remembered that good things take time, but they are very much worth the effort.

Head to a home improvement store and talk with trained professionals who will help you choose the products that will enable you to make the best of your furniture. Try to choose non caustic chemicals and select natural products for the task at hand. If you do go with harsh chemicals, be sure not to smoke and work outdoors or in a heavily ventilated area. If you decide to use power tools, make sure you observe the proper safety, such as using earplugs, and having a fire extinguisher at hand. If you are going to change the sandpaper on a sander, make sure to unplug the device. The furniture should also be cleaned with a wax or wood cleaner, such that you can determine whether a piece is worth saving.

Determining how to remove the finish first depend on identifying the finish that was previously used.

Determination of the prior finish is achieved via these steps:

1 - Take a cotton ball and load it with alcohol.

2 - Put this on a concealed area of the furniture and leave for about ten minutes. If the finish dissolves, then it is likely shellac.

3 - If the shellac does not dissolve, try lacquer thinner. If this works, then the finish is lacquer.

4 - Should these steps fail, you are likely dealing with a varnish or synthetic finish. If the finish is worn or faded, it may just suffice it to apply the same finish again.

Should you decide to perform a full finish, you should strip the furniture and begin a sanding process to take off some thin layers of the wood. Be sure to change out the sandpaper frequently, to ensure the best finish. An orbital sander can make short work of the sanding task, while a sanding block can be used for tight areas. After the surface is prepped, it is short work to follow the directions and apply the new stain, making sure to paint and even coat. After you are finished with the stain, you have to apply a sealer to the piece of furniture.

Furniture Arrangement

Moving the furniture to create a conversation grouping, especially if you've had furniture lining the walls, will make a big difference. Get the furniture away from the walls and set it on the diagonal in a group. One of the most simple and free ideas for living rooms involves just turning everything around to face the opposite direction. This will instantly change the look of the room, and might make you see some things you didn't before.

Add Mirrors

It's a little more expensive, but choosing artwork that incorporates the colors in your furniture and/or rug will give the room a pulled-together look. Repairing leather doesn’t need to be difficult, though—and most of the time it can be done at home without even expending much effort.  In fact, because leather is so easy to repair, this type of furniture can last for many years, looking better as it ages.  Here is a guide to keeping leather furniture in great shape for years to come.

Repairing Holes in Leather Furniture

Holes in leather furniture do not often occur; however, they can happen for a variety of reasons.  For example, a dog’s or cat’s nails could puncture a hole in the course of jumping onto the furniture piece.

In order to properly repair this type of issue with a piece of leather furniture it will be necessary to purchase a leather repair kit that contains patches of leather.  Even though the leather repair patch will be placed under the hole and will be only minutely visible, it is still advisable to buy a kit that matches the color of the furniture piece being repaired.  It is not a good idea to keep a repair kit at home on hand; this is because the elements of the kit can deteriorate with time and may be too old to work correctly by the time they are needed.

Follow directions on the leather repair kit, of course.  In general, though, kits will state to place a patch under the hole and then put repair compound on top of the hole.

Repairing Cuts in Leather Furniture

These typically happen as a result of an accident or from the spreading of a small hole.  With a cut in leather furniture, it is essential to keep the piece out of use until the repair has been made.  This is because if people use the furniture piece while it has a cut, the cut is likely to expand.

To repair cuts, a kit with chemical compound is needed.  The compound will be used to fill the gap; then it will be necessary to secure the cut edges together.

Repairing Scuffs and Scratches on Leather Furniture

Scuff marks occur when something with hard edges is pushed against the leather furniture; these often happen when a person is moving to a different home or when moving furniture throughout the home.  Scratches can come from any sharp object, from a haphazardly-placed metal nail file to a quickly-jumping dog, for instance.

To repair these marks, it is necessary to have the chemical compound from a leather repair kit.  Inject the compound into the scratch or scuff and blend until the marks are no longer visible.
