Today, we have so many options when it comes to picking a garage door that it can be a bit overwhelming. However, there are a few guidelines and tips you can use to make the selection process a lot easier. Let's take a look at the four main types of doors, as well as their benefits and downsides.

1. Roller Doors -

If your space is at a premium in your garage, or you don't want to have to install tracks for the door this is the best option. The door will simply roll up into a big ball when it goes up. This means that the material used is a little more flexible than the average door, so it may not be as durable as other kinds. However, if you're looking for an easy installation and you don't have a lot of space, this is a great choice. This type of door works well with most garage door openers, especially the ones that are mounted on the wall above the door, instead of in the middle of the garage ceiling.

2. Sectional Doors -

This is a hybrid between the roller door and a standard door. It's made of several sections that are hinged together and the material is usually quite rigid and durable. This type of door became very popular in higher end housing communities where it was important to match the style of the door to the style of the house. These doors come in many different colors and materials. They will be raised like a traditional garage door, so you will need to install tracking for it. These take up quite a bit of headroom in your garage and will require an opener that is placed in the center of the garage ceiling. This type of door will work best in garages where there is a lot of headroom and space.

3. Tilting Doors -

These are not as popular as they once were, but you can still find them. If you have a Craftsman style or other type of older home and you want to retain that "old" feel, this is a very good choice. They don't use a lot of headroom and are pretty easy to install. They will require tracks however and normally, this type of door will not work with an opener. Practically any kind of material can be used for this type of door and you'll be able to match it to your home's exterior quite well.

4. Flexi Doors -

These are sold under various brand names, but the general concept is that they are made of flexible material and fit onto a curved track. These work well in garages where there is not a lot of headroom, or in garages that had older style doors that needed to be replaced. They are available in a variety of different materials and are usually pretty durable. Overall, this is probably the best door for most homes and it's the easiest to maintain.

1 - Begin by creating a staging area.

If you can park at least one car in your two car garage, then you can probably organize everything else in a day. Create a staging area where you can put items as you take them out of the garage, such as a lawn or driveway area. Any flat area will generally do, and you may need to use the inside of your home if you do not have adequate space in the yard, or if the weather forecast indicates that leaving things outside may be a bad idea.

2 - Enlist some assistance from friends or family.

Your family is usually the best place to go, because you are probably not the only responsible person for the clutter in the garage. Now is an excellent time to teach your children about organizing skills. They will learn to be more invested in keeping the space organized if they helped with the process in the first place. Organizing projects are generally much easier and much quicker when you enlist the assistance of other people, especially motivated young people like your children. If all else fails and you cannot enlist help from your family or friends, consider bringing in a professional organizer to help you out.

3 - Get started early on in the day, because most garage organization projects take longer than anyone originally imagines.

Getting an early start will allow you to avoid working late into the night. Getting started early will also give you a solid head start while it is nice and cool outside.

4 - Work from the outside in.

Open the garage door up and start in whatever corner is closest to your driveway, then work toward the home. Handle each and every item that you see, and make a decision right then and there about whether it will stay or go. Keeping everything and avoiding having to make decisions is how you got into this particular mess in the first place, so only keep the items that you really value in your life. Keep a pile near the street of items that you want to throw away, and bag or box them up to be thrown away later.

5 - Group the things you'll keep by their category.

Place items in your stage area based on their category rather than simply making a single keep pile. Going back through things a second time is a complete waste, so categorize everything the first time around and you will save yourself a lot of hassle in the process.

6 - Add tools for storage.

Once your garage is emptied, add storage tools like free standing shelving units, built in shelving, wall mounted shelving, peg boards, closed cabinets and so on. Research your available options and pricing and determine which is the best system before you install anything because each has its own pros and cons.

Having a garage door opener makes life a lot easier and it can add safety features to an existing door. There are numerous kinds of opener and more kinds of doors, but for the sake of brevity, we're going to cover installing a garage door opener that mounts on the wall above the door. This type of installation allows for more head room and can be a lot safer. The type of door for this opener is usually the type that will either fold up, or that can be raised on a track.

First, you'll need to follow the instructions that are included with your opener. All openers are different, and while we can supply some general tips, you'll need to make sure you are using the right tools and techniques for your particular opener. Keep these instructions in a safe place when you're done in case you ever need to repair your opener.

Ok, let's get started. Before you go any further, disconnect the power to the garage. First, you're going to need to mount that opener above the garage door. Make sure that the wall is sturdy enough to handle the weight since some openers can be quite heavy. Using countersunk screws, attach the provided mounting brackets to the wall. You will need to make sure that you are attaching these brackets to a stud and that the screws are firmly in place.

Attach the wires in the motor to the switch on the wall. You may need some additional help from a qualified electrician if this is a brand new installation. If you're just replacing an opener, follow the instructions to hook up the wires correctly. Make sure that you do everything correctly - wiring is not something you want to mess with. IMPORTANT: make sure that you properly hookup the emergency disconnect device. This will save a life if someone gets trapped under the door.

Now, attach the motor to the brackets, taking special care to make sure that it is secure. Attach the motor to the door using the provided belts or chains. Again, all openers are different, so at this point you will need to refer back to your instructions. Set that emergency disconnect device to MANUAL before going any further.

Raise up the door until it is completely up and then put it back down until it is completely down. Make sure that there aren't any hitches in its movement. It should be fluid and as noise free as possible. Keep in mind that belt attachments are usually much quieter than chains.

Plug in the opener and then set up the remote control. Follow your unit's instructions. Clean up the area and double check all connections. Turn the power back on and test the unit. Please note that it's best to be outside of the garage during testing to avoid getting trapped inside. (It does happen.) Once you're sure everything is working properly, you're all set - go have a cold drink and celebrate!

While many homes already have basic garages built into them, this isn't always the case, and some families find themselves seeking free plans, garage plans and the like. Some newer properties, and properties built by architects rather than home-building companies often do not come with the same garage space that families are accustomed to. For this reason, it may become necessary to do a search for free plans, garage style plans being your main focus. There are plenty of free garage plans out there that make the entire process a whole lot easier. Don't get roped in to spending an exorbitant amount of money on garage plans when you can acquire similar plans for absolutely free.

You may have a basic idea about building a garage, but it is generally better to work with a good solid plan than to do it yourself. Even if you have the technical knowledge regarding building and construction, working from a plan is always a safer bet. When it comes to free plans, garage plans can become a little complicated because there are so many different considerations to make. One of the best options to deal with all of these different considerations is to work with garage planning software or a home building software program. Not only do these programs feature free plans; garage plans are also usually included. These may not be one-button-push solutions, but they do make it easy to custom build your own garage plans, with all of the technical details and building information mapped out for you.

These software solutions allow you to create garage plans in 2-D format before building them in 3-d format. This way you can inspect the entire plan in three-dimensional view before you print it out and start building. If you do not feel comfortable designing your own garage plans, then another option for free garage plans is to perform an online search to find home builders and building companies that offer their garage plans as free plans. Many online company offer these garage plans, some of which are partially converted into living spaces, workshops, dens and other types of areas. By searching for what other people have done with their garage plans, you can fuel your own creative ideas and come up with something unique without having to worry about the technical aspects behind the design.

The final option is to buy a prefabricated assembly kit for a garage. Because you are paying for the kit, you are not exactly getting free plans, but the plans do come with the kit for free, and you get everything you need to build the entire garage as well, so this is quite the viable option as well. This way you know you have not only the right free plans, garage building materials, and the technical details laid out, but you also have a virtually fool proof build because everything has been mapped out for you.

In the cold months of winter, there are a number of things you can do to conserve fuel and same money. The main way to conserve energy is to prevent heat from leaving the home. The first step is to make sure that the walls, ceilings and floors are insulated with material rated at the proper R value. The savings that are afforded will easily pay for the cost to update your insulation. Proper storm doors and windows will also reduce the amount of air leakage and heat escapement. Another technique is to caulk around doors, windows, the foundation of your home, along with good weather stripping. All of these will reduce the amount of heat escaping.

There are also things you should do to in common practice to conserve fuel. Keep doors to the outside closed and secured. Doors to an attached garage should also be closed as well. If the garage is heated, maintain it at around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The basement should be insulated with cracks in the foundation sealed and doors and windows treated as above. Crawl spaces and ventilating grills should be closed off and sealed when heating is concerned.

When it comes to your thermostat, you need to make sure that the heat is reaching your thermostat; otherwise, your home could overheat. In the areas that you do not use, you should lower the temperature by roughly 10%, and have the doors closed. These will help to save fuel to greater extents. The thermostat should be placed on a inside wall, away from sunlight. Do not allow outside means to affect the thermostat and give a false temperature reading.

Unless you are ventilating your home, you should keep doors and windows closed, and have the fireplace damper closed when not in use. Glass doors can also be used to seal off the fireplace as well. You should make sure that before the heating season starts, you perform maintenance on all of the devices that make up your heating system. Pipes and air ducts should be insulated when exposed to areas that are unheated. Hot water faucets should not drip, and any heat opening should be unblocked. Make sure the heating pipes are clear of debris and lint.

A major source of leakage are the outlets and switches around the home. Preventing air leakage can be done by installing gaskets under the panels. The best gaskets are home made. Buy a roll of 1/8" sill plate gasket, place the covers on the gasket, and trace them out and cut them with a razor. Install the gaskets behind the panel when you install the panels. Safety plug covers also help to block air flow through the outlets.

When it comes to reducing your heating bill and conserving fuel, you should identify sources of heat leakage and seal them off. Devices meant to heat should be in working order, and the thermostat should not be in a place where it can be influenced by anything other than the room's ambient temperature.
