Not all of us can afford the best apartments or houses and chances are you’re dealing with at least one room that is little more than a closet. While you may not be able to knock down a few walls, there are a few techniques that you can use to make that space feel and look a lot bigger.

1. Use light colors.

Light paint really does make a difference, but don’t stop there. Stick to very pale, neutral colors with furniture and floor coverings as well. This can make a tiny room look quite large when utilized correctly. Think as pale as possible and limit any bright colors to throw pillows or small pictures. Light drapes or window coverings will also help make the room seem bigger.

2. Downsize your decorating.

A small room with a really big couch is going to feel that much smaller. Use a loveseat instead or a double sized chair. The same is true with pictures. Keep your big pictures to the big rooms and use smaller pictures in your smaller rooms. Resist the urge to overdo! Remember, one small painting in the middle of the wall will not only pull the eye, but it will make the space around it seem bigger.

3. Draw the eyes upward.

Although borders are a bit passé, they can be very useful when you’re dealing with a narrow room that has higher ceilings. This trick will not work however if you have low ceilings, it will just make them seem that much lower. In this case, paint the ceiling a very bright white. It will give the illusion that it is taller and that there is more overall space.

4. Use the right kind of lighting.

When light is properly used in a room, it makes it seem bigger. Keep lamps to the perimeter of the room and make sure that they have light shades to minimize shadows. Use your ceiling lights instead to once again draw the eye upward and illuminate the entire space.

5. Make use of the flooring.

Let’s say that you have a very square room that is quite small. In this case, you would want to run your flooring vertically, either with tile or wood. Wood floors are a great choice for a small room. You won’t be spending much money and they have the effect of elongating or widening a room when placed in the right direction. Before you make it permanent, lay down a few boards in the room and see if it makes it feel bigger or smaller. When using throw rugs over your wood floors, go a little bit smaller so that the space on the floor looks bigger.

6. Don’t over accessorize.

A room with clutter instantly feels small. Keep the knick-knacks to a minimum in a small room and use shelves when necessary. Your goal is to create an almost Spartan space, that will feel much more open and airy.

Whether you are looking to upgrade a dated fixture, or you are looking for a solution that will provide you with more usable light, replacing a fixture is typically the best solution. With care and by following instructions, pretty much anyone can replace a light fixture. However, before we get started, it is vital to note that you must turn off the power to your home before you begin. If you do not know how to do this, contact a professional to have them install the fixture for you. Thousands of people are injured or killed yearly due to electric shock that could have been prevented.

Generally, replacing a light fixture is easier than installing a brand new one. You won’t have to worry about running wires to a new switch and you should be able to simply use the old connection to the switch in the wall. However, it is important to make sure that you will have a compatible unit before you begin this process.

Shop for a light fixture based not only on its uses, but also its electrical rating and the overall size. Unless you want to do a lot of drilling and wiring, it is simply easier to limit your search to models that will fit precisely where the old one used to. Measure the base of your current fixture and write down all of its measurements before you head to the store. This will help you determine what models will work best for your needs.

Once you have your new light fixture, you are ready to start. Turn off the electricity to your house before you begin. Make sure that everyone knows why the electricity is off to ensure that it does not get turned back on unexpectedly. The process for installation does not take that long, so you will not be out of power for an extended period of time.

After the power is off, remove the old light fixture, taking care with the wires. Newer models will allow you to simply unplug the electrical wires and reattach them to the new model, but with older fixtures that were hard wired, you may need to actually cut the wires, strip them and attach them to the new fixture.

Unpack your new fixture and carefully read the instructions twice. This is done to make sure that you don’t miss anything. Prepare the fixture as per the instructions and then get ready to reattach the wires. Once this is complete, you can simply attach the fixture to the ceiling and test it. Turn the electricity back on and make sure the switch works. If you followed all of the instructions to the letter, it should operate perfectly. If not, you will need to troubleshoot.

Once again, turn off that electricity before proceeding. Check your wire connections on the new fixture and see if something is lose or hooked up wrong. Keep going over this process, turning of the electricity each and every time until the unit works.

It’s a simple and inexpensive thing to install recessed lighting in a room and though it seems small you’ll be impressed by how much of a difference it can make.

All you really need to install recessed lighting is a preexisting ceiling fixture, which will provide you with the wiring you need for your recessed lighting. There are two types of recessed lights to choose from: eyeball style lights and down lights. Eyeball style lights can be pointed in a specific direction in order to highlight a certain part of the room. Down lights shed a wider light just like a standard fixture might.

The first thing you must do before you install recessed lighting is develop a good layout. Recessed lighting works differently from normal fixtures. In larger rooms, you may need to add multiple recessed lights in order to thoroughly light the area. You generally want to space them about 6 feet apart from each other to get the best coverage. The use of eyeball style lights is more a matter of taste, since they are more about providing a focus rather than general lighting.

The next step is to figure out what kind of wiring and structure you’re working with. If there’s nothing about your ceiling but an attic, then it’s very little hassle to install recessed lighting. You can purchase recessed light cans at any store where you find the lights. These cans are designed for use in areas with insulation, such as attics. Since you don’t have to worry too much about making your attic like nice, it’s simple to run the necessary wiring to your lights in whatever way is most convenient.

It can be more difficult to install recessed lighting if there is another floor above the ceiling. There are specialized types of recessed lighting cans that must be used in this case, and the wiring has to be run more carefully so it’s not strewn about the upper floor.

Another problem that crops when you want to install recessed lighting is what to do with your old fixtures. There are a lot of options to choose from and some of them can enhance the new décor even further. For example, you can purchase decorate coverings over where the old fixtures used to be. You could also put a ceiling fan in that location, or you could simply replace the old fixture with another recessed light. Or, if it doesn’t ruin the new look you have going, you can keep the original fixture right along with the new recessed lights – whatever works best for you!

It allows you to control the lighting in a room. Instead of flicking a switch to turn the light off and on, a light dimmer switch lets you turn a knob or control some other switch to darken and brighten a room. It's a very easy to-it-yourself project that can make a big difference in the ambiance of a space.

You have many choices when you go to purchase a light dimmer switch. Some are round knobs, others are sliders or touch panels. Which one you choose is just your preference. But there are a few things you need to be aware of to ensure you purchase the right type of light dimmer switch.

You might need a special type of light dimmer switch if you use a special type of bulb. For instance, certain low-voltage lights and halogen lights require special dimmers. Fluorescent lighting generally can't be dimmed with a light dimmer switch at all.

If you're replacing a single light switch, you'll need what's called a single-pole dimmer. If there are two switches that control the same lights, you'll need a three-way light dimmer switch. Also, make sure the dimmer switch has the capacity to handle the total wattage of all the bulbs in the lights you'll be wiring to the light dimmer switch.

You'll want to check the light dimmer switch manufacturer's instructions to be sure, but for the most part the instructions are the same from switch to switch.

1.Of course, as with any job involving electricity, cut the power to the light switch.

2.Remove the light switch faceplate with a screwdriver.

3.Unscrew the switch and gently pull the switch out. Don't put too much pressure on the wires or try to yank the switch free.

4.Make sure the power's still off by using a cheap voltage tester.

5.Undo the wires from the old switch and then cut the bare wire off. Strip the wire almost half an inch. (If you find aluminum wiring, a gray wire as opposed to the orange of copper, call a professional.)

6.The light dimmer switch you're about to install may already be fully wired for your convenience. And the wires may already be stripped. If not, you merely need to screw the wires onto the dimmer as they were onto the switch. Once you stripped wire, you'll want to twist the bare main wire around the wire from the wall. Use a wire nut to secure the wires. Connect each wire in a similar fashion.

7.Wrap the wire junction and the wire nut in electric tape extending both below and above the nut.

8.Carefully tuck everything back into he wall box. It can be a challenge at first, because a light dimmer switch is bigger, but it will fit in the box.

9.Screw switch into place and replace the faceplate.

10.Turn the power back on and test your new light dimmer switch.
