As the winter months get closer, this usually means having a whole host of little non-paying tenants moving into your homes. Whether it’s mice, box elder bugs, crickets or any other type of critter, these unwanted guests can pose much more than a nuisance. In the case of mice, they can carry deadly diseases, and other pests may be just as dangerous. So, how can you stop this mass influx of pests in the fall? Here are some great tips to get you started.

1. Seal all small entry holes under sinks, by baseboards, and outside.

Your house, no matter how well it was built, is bound to have a few holes somewhere along the way. These holes are put to good use by pests and before long, you may be overrun. In order to prevent this, get some hardware mesh and attach it over the holes. This mesh will usually keep out larger bugs and mice, and is very economical to install.

For warped boards under sinks and smaller gaps, consider purchasing insulation in a spray can. This can be sprayed directly onto the hole and will effectively seal it up to keep pests out. You may need to keep checking it, especially if mice decide to give it a nibble.

2. Place traps around your home.

Mouse traps, bug traps and other small critter traps can be very effective at keeping the pest population in your home under control. These traps are usually economical and there are many options now available. For example, you can now find easy close mouse traps that prevent you from have to actually touch the dead mouse, and they are much more effective than the old wooden ones with fake cheese. You may need to bait these traps however, in order to get the most functionality out of them. Peanut butter works very well for mice since they can’t grab it and run.

If the thought of killing the critters doesn’t work for you, you can also purchase live traps, or more human traps that kill with a quick electric shock. Although you may not like the fact that you are killing a small creature, the fact of the matter is they can cause thousands in damage to your home and they are indeed health hazards.

3. Stop the damage before it is done.

If you see one mouse, or one bug, chances are there are plenty more than you haven’t spotted yet. Be on the lookout for droppings, and dead bugs around your home. Try to find their entry point and seal it up. This is an easy way to take care of business before it gets out of hand.

With careful attention and prevention, you can keep your home pest free all year long. If you live in the country, you may need to up your efforts, or consider installing ultrasound devices that will plug into the wall and prevent pests from moving in with sound waves, since these can be very effective.

If you're a renter, then you know that sometime it takes a while to feel at home in a new place, especially if you've had to move frequently in recent years. There's more to making a house or apartment feel like home than just moving your stuff in and setting it up. These 7 things can help you feel more at ease and at home right away.

Clean thoroughly. Any good landlord will make sure that the apartment or house you're renting is thoroughly clean before you move in. But if you clean it yourself you remove that lingering doubt that maybe it wasn't cleaned thoroughly. And it will smell like your cleaning products, which will make it smell like your old home so it's more familiar right away.

Call an exterminator for an inspection and treatment if necessary for things like mice and roaches. Even if you don't see anything now, that doesn't mean it's not there. It won't feel much like home if you wake to discover you have roommates you didn't expect.

Change the locks. Even if you trust your landlord, you don't know if all the keys to your new home have been turned in over the years. You'll immediately feel more secure.

Pay attention to the bathroom. If there's a trash can, toss it and get a new one. Look for hair build up in the tub and sink drains and remove it now. And change the toilet seat to a brand new one.

Be sure you have plenty of extension cords in case the outlets aren't in great places. You don't want to feel frustrated by your inability to reach them.

Spent a few hours really looking around the area, into all the nooks and crannies, so you can discover anything left behind now rather than later and just get more familiar with your new home.

Pay special attention to the fridge. Clean and disinfect it to remove any traces of the last tenant.

It is a fact of life that insects exist, and that they go to where the food is. Who can blame them for wanting to share in our wealth by living under our roof and eating our items left behind. You want to eliminate the pest problem in your home, but chemicals are harmful to you, your pets and the environment. Luckily, there are natural ways to address the common household insect problems that can occur.

Ants -

The first step in the problem is to make sure that there is nothing available to attract the ants to your home. Keep sweets out of reach for the ant and make sure there are no water sources. Should ants persist in their invasion, there are natural things you can do. Spray ants with a bit of soapy water. Cucumber slices and dry and crushed mint and cloves all work as deterrents. If you identified their point entry, placing a line of the following will halt their approach – cayenne pepper, citrus oil, lemon juice and coffee grounds.

Dust Mites

Dust mite are microscopic bugs that are everywhere in the home. Those who have allergies are truly susceptible to their presence. The ways to get rid of these mites are the following – first and foremost, vacuum mattresses and pillows, to grab the excess dust and dust mites. Wash your bed sheets and blanket at 55 degrees centigrade. Make sure that there are no stuffed animals or book in the bedroom as they can harbor mites. Tannic Acid is also a green solution.

Cockroaches -

The best defense is to remove their food. Make sure the kitchen and bathroom are clean. If roaches persist, then you'll need to vacuum thoroughly, following up with a good cleaning. Other tips include placing traps high above, where the roaches prefer to reside. Diatomaceous earth is also a pet and people friendly way to counter roaches, the sand has little sharp edge that cut away the roach's exoskeleton, killing it in 48 hours. Catnip also works as a natural repellent (so long as there are no cats in the house).

Fleas -

Those with pets know of the flea scourge. There may be as many as 30 fleas in the home for every flea on the pet. Citrus is a natural flea deterrent, by taking a lemon slice and covering with boiled water, the resultant liquid will work as a wash for the pat, removing fleas from the animal. Cedar based products also work, given cedar's natural gift for insect repellent. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly, putting flea powder in the bag to kill those fleas you get. A shallow pan filled with soapy water will also work with a lamp above hand attracting the fleas.

Mosquitoes -

These little insects are a constant annoyance, and they can be difficult to get rid of. The best way to combat the invasion is the following - do not keep standing water around the home and garden. Oil of eucalyptus at a 30% concentration is one of the most effect mosquito repellents. Planting marigolds about the home will also work as a deterrent, since the marigold scent is one that insects and mosquitoes do not like.

Termites are nasty little creatures that can be found throughout the United States. In fact, most homeowners have no idea they've been invaded by millions of termites until the damage is already done. If you've never seen a termite, they resemble a white ant and they have colony structures that are quite similar to ants. However, unlike their cousins, they have one main diet staple - the wood in your house. If you don't want to deal with thousands of dollars in termite damage, there are a few steps you'll need to take to termite proof your home.

First, you'll need to make sure that you don't have any decaying wood lying around near your house. This is a frequent cause of infestation. If you have firewood, make sure that you store it away from the house and when you bring it inside, burn it immediately. This cuts down on the risk of basically giving the termites the key to your front door.

It is also important to check your home's foundation for any cracks. If you find them, seal them up properly. This will help prevent future infestations, but it really can't do much if you already have a problem. However, before you move to the next step, you'll have to get this done. You'll also need to create a barrier around your home that termites won't be able to cross.

This usually involves putting sand around the foundation of your home. If you have a lot of wood near the ground, this is very important. Cement block foundations usually do pretty well in preventing infestations on their own, but it doesn't hurt to be too careful when it comes to termites. Make sure that you pack a good, thick layer of sand around the foundation. If you get a lot of rain or wind, you may need to reapply this every few months.

Next, it's a good idea to schedule a yearly visit with the termite inspector. The less time you give them, the harder it will be for a termite colony to spread. Keep in mind that they can have thousands of offspring every month and it doesn't take long for a few termites to morph into a few million. If you live in an area that has frequent termite swarms (cloudlike concentrations of termites seeking new homes) you'll want to take extra care and be very vigilant.

If you do find termites on your property, it is best to let a termite control professional handle them. Many people make the mistake of trying to use bug spray or even fire to get rid of termites that they find in nearby logs. Well, when you destroy that home, they're going to need to find a new one and the ones that survive are going to head straight for yours.

Termites can be destructive, but you don't have to give them free reign. Employ these protection practices to ensure that your home stays termite free.

Winter is just around the corner and this means getting your home ready. While this is mainly important for those that live in colder climates, many of these tips are useful even if you have a house in the desert. Getting your home ready for winter is actually quite easy and there are ways to save money on it if you are on a tight budget. Keep in mind that the efforts you perform now to winterize your home can pay off in a big way if you can prevent damage from burst pipes.

1. Pick up all the yard junk, hoses and outdoor furniture.

Fall is a great time to get your yard ready for winter, and that means picking up all the little odds and ends that can accumulate throughout the year. Wind up any hoses and drain them of water completely. If you don’t have a garage, you can store these in the basement, once all the water is out. Outdoor furniture should be stored away in winter as well. This will help increase its life span and reduce the risk of having mildew form in chair cushions, or rust damage that can be very common on metal fittings.

2. Wrap up your hot water heater.

This is a great tip that will help you save money on your energy costs. Most hardware stores will sell what they call a hot water heater “blanket.” This is fire resistant material that is wrapped around your water heater to insulate it. By taking this step, you can dramatically reduce your energy bill, especially if you have a propane powered water heater. Given the rising cost of propane, this is a smart choice.

3. Get prepared for an influx of unwanted critters.

You aren’t the only one trying to make sure that your home will be cozy all winter long. This is the time of year that our furry little friends make a mad dash to get inside and set up housekeeping. Unfortunately, many of these creatures, such as mice, also carry diseases that can be deadly. Use hardware mesh around any openings and set humane “quick kill” traps around your house.

4. Seal up your windows.

Weatherstripping as it is commonly called is a great way to get your home winterized and save money on costs. You can get these kits at any hardware store and they are easy to install. Basically, you’ll be sealing your windows with durable plastic sheeting. This cuts down on drafts and lost heat dramatically.

These are just a few simple tips to help you get your home ready for winter. By taking the time to get these tasks done before winter, you’ll be assured of having a warm and cozy home, no matter what the outside temperature may be. Most of these tips can be done on a budget as well. Take a look at your home and see just how many winterization ideas you can come up with today.
