House flea sprays and bug bombs are one do it yourself pest control method. The bombs require tons of cleaning, as anything sitting out will be coated in the poisonous substance, and things like dishes and glasses and anything used for food preparation will need to be washed, for safety's sake. You do have to leave the home for about 4 hours while the bug bomb works its magic. The upside is that when you return, the fleas should all be dead.

At a certain stage during the flea life cycle, the pupal or cocoon stage, the fleas will be unaffected by most bombs and sprays. Certain do it yourself pest control foggers do claim that once those fleas mature, however, any eggs they lay will be killed by the residual effect of the treatment. This means that once the hatched fleas die, so there will be no more. This also means that the toxins that killed the fleas are present in your home for however many months the product is supposed to prevent the return of the fleas. Only you can decide if that's worth it.

Flea sprays contain those same substances and are more temporary. And if you don't also treat your pets carefully with good flea control practices as well as vacuum regularly, the fleas can come back in no time. In the last few years, vets and pet owners have been lamenting the way fleas are adapting to most pest control products. Some of the chemicals used on pets and in most popular flea medication aren't as effective as they once were.

For do it yourself pest control for fleas that won't leave poisonous residue in your home, there are two very natural and effective methods you can use. For your yard, you can purchase beneficial nematodes from a garden center or natural store online. They feed on things like weevils, fleas, termites, grubs, ants and cutworms, among other pests.

For the house, purchase Diatomaceous Earth from a natural or garden store. Also known as fossil shell flour, DE is mineral dust from certain quarries. It's completely non-toxic, and 100% effective in killing every flea or hard-shelled insect it touches. DE is microscopically jagged, so that it punctures their carapace and they dry out and die. To us it feels like a soft, fine powder. DE is often sold for the purpose of do it yourself pest control, so follow the application instructions carefully. This can take a week or so before the indoor flea population is gone, because it's touch-based rather than poison, but it does work.

(Be sure you purchase food-grade DE and not the DE designed for use in pool filters. That type of DE has been heated and is highly toxic. )

Use DE and beneficial nematodes together with good pet flea control practices, and your do it yourself pest control will have you flea-free in no time.

First, you'll need to make sure that you don't have any decaying wood lying around near your house. This is a frequent cause of infestation. If you have firewood, make sure that you store it away from the house and when you bring it inside, burn it immediately. This cuts down on the risk of basically giving the termites the key to your front door.

It is also important to check your home's foundation for any cracks. If you find them, seal them up properly. This will help prevent future infestations, but it really can't do much if you already have a problem. However, before you move to the next step, you'll have to get this done. You'll also need to create a barrier around your home that termites won't be able to cross.

This usually involves putting sand around the foundation of your home. If you have a lot of wood near the ground, this is very important. Cement block foundations usually do pretty well in preventing infestations on their own, but it doesn't hurt to be too careful when it comes to termites. Make sure that you pack a good, thick layer of sand around the foundation. If you get a lot of rain or wind, you may need to reapply this every few months.

Next, it's a good idea to schedule a yearly visit with the termite inspector. The less time you give them, the harder it will be for a termite colony to spread. Keep in mind that they can have thousands of offspring every month and it doesn't take long for a few termites to morph into a few million. If you live in an area that has frequent termite swarms (cloudlike concentrations of termites seeking new homes) you'll want to take extra care and be very vigilant.

If you do find termites on your property, it is best to let a termite control professional handle them. Many people make the mistake of trying to use bug spray or even fire to get rid of termites that they find in nearby logs. Well, when you destroy that home, they're going to need to find a new one and the ones that survive are going to head straight for yours.

Termites can be destructive, but you don't have to give them free reign. Employ these protection practices to ensure that your home stays termite free.

Ants -

The first step in the problem is to make sure that there is nothing available to attract the ants to your home. Keep sweets out of reach for the ant and make sure there are no water sources. Should ants persist in their invasion, there are natural things you can do. Spray ants with a bit of soapy water. Cucumber slices and dry and crushed mint and cloves all work as deterrents. If you identified their point entry, placing a line of the following will halt their approach – cayenne pepper, citrus oil, lemon juice and coffee grounds.

Dust Mites

Dust mite are microscopic bugs that are everywhere in the home. Those who have allergies are truly susceptible to their presence. The ways to get rid of these mites are the following – first and foremost, vacuum mattresses and pillows, to grab the excess dust and dust mites. Wash your bed sheets and blanket at 55 degrees centigrade. Make sure that there are no stuffed animals or book in the bedroom as they can harbor mites. Tannic Acid is also a green solution.

Cockroaches -

The best defense is to remove their food. Make sure the kitchen and bathroom are clean. If roaches persist, then you'll need to vacuum thoroughly, following up with a good cleaning. Other tips include placing traps high above, where the roaches prefer to reside. Diatomaceous earth is also a pet and people friendly way to counter roaches, the sand has little sharp edge that cut away the roach's exoskeleton, killing it in 48 hours. Catnip also works as a natural repellent (so long as there are no cats in the house).

Fleas -

Those with pets know of the flea scourge. There may be as many as 30 fleas in the home for every flea on the pet. Citrus is a natural flea deterrent, by taking a lemon slice and covering with boiled water, the resultant liquid will work as a wash for the pat, removing fleas from the animal. Cedar based products also work, given cedar's natural gift for insect repellent. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly, putting flea powder in the bag to kill those fleas you get. A shallow pan filled with soapy water will also work with a lamp above hand attracting the fleas.

Mosquitoes -

These little insects are a constant annoyance, and they can be difficult to get rid of. The best way to combat the invasion is the following - do not keep standing water around the home and garden. Oil of eucalyptus at a 30% concentration is one of the most effect mosquito repellents. Planting marigolds about the home will also work as a deterrent, since the marigold scent is one that insects and mosquitoes do not like.

Instead of using harmful chemicals, let's talk about some other ways to get rid of rodents that are just as effective. The first is the live trap, a favorite among those who cannot come to terms with dealing out death to small creatures. Keep in mind that there are some health risks involved with these traps, since you will be able to breath in the fumes or dust from their excretions, but if you simply cannot kill them, this is a humane way of getting rid of rodents.

You'll need to place your live trap in an area that is frequented by the rodents and then you're going to need to check it often. There's no point of going to the trouble of trapping them alive if you let them starve to death. Keep in mind however that once you have one rodent in there it's a lot easier to attract others. Never leave them in there alive for more than two days. Once your trap is full, you can take it to a wooded area or open space and release them. Never release them too close to your home, since they'll just move right back in.

If you don't want to handle live rodents (and not many people do) there are numerous different kinds of traps that can be used. Glue traps are common, but not recommended. They are actually pretty cruel and too often family pets end up trapped in them as well. It can take days for the rodent to die a very painful death in a glue trap, or they may chew off their own limbs to escape. Not pretty. This leaves quick death traps which are highly recommended and the safest to use.

The simple smack ‘em on the neck traps are the cheapest and with the right type of bait, work very well. You'll still have to handle the dead mouse though and there is the potential for spreading disease. The best trap is the type that looks like a live trap but will electrocute the rodent as soon as it enters. This is the quickest and most pain free death for the rodent and you don't have to touch the body to dispose of it.

Rodents may be cute but they are also deadly. If you've got an infestation, it's vital to take care of it right away.
