- * An easy way for you to begin the removal process for old caulk is to use a caulk removal solution such as 3M Caulk Remover. This is a professional, commercial grade caulk removal solution that is capable of breaking down and destroying the bold between the tile, the tub or the sink and the old caulk. The liquid caulk remover that 3M offers comes in a simple to use plastic squeeze bottle, costing less than $10, and one bottle is capable of removing just over 20 linear feet worth of old caulk material. This is a truly excellent way for you to jump start the softening up and removal of the old caulk rather than simply relying on scraping it away.

- * To use the chemical remover, squeeze the product directly onto the old caulk, taking care to cover it completely. Allow the chemical to sit on the old caulk for at least two hours, but as long as 7 hours. Using a caulk removing tool or a plastic putty knife, simply scrape the old caulk material away. It should come off in chunky pieces. Once this is all scraped away, you can clean up what remains using a soap and water mixture.

It also has a corner scraper that is capable of scraping the joint sides so that the finish will not be damaged but the caulk will still be used.

The best way to remove caulk is with a combination of these two essential tools. One or the other will definitely work to get the job done, but if you want the best possible results then you are going to need to be willing to combine both. The 3M removal product will break up the old caulk, and the Homax tool will swipe it away in no time at all.

The T Handle -

The T handle is designed to fasten into the top square end of a screw extractor. If you do not want to use a screw extractor's t-handle, you can use vice grip pliers or an adjustable wrench instead.

It should be fairly obvious how the T-handle got its name, since it is shaped similarly to a T. This particular type of handle has been designed to screw down over the top of the screw extractor bit's square end. Once it has been tightened down, you can easily turn the screw extractor, creating more pressure than if you were holding the screw extractor with pliers or a wrench.

Drilling a Pilot Hole in a Damaged Screw

If you have a damaged screw or a damaged bolt, then the first step in removing it is going to be to prepare it for the insertion of your screw extractor bit. Your screw extractor bit has been designed in order to screw directly into the damaged screw or stripped bolt, but it cannot be inserted until a pilot hole has been drilled.

• You are going to want to begin with a power drill, drilling a hole directly into the center of the screw that has been damaged.
• Oftentimes, the surface of the screw that has been damaged is not even, and so the best way for you to begin the pilot hole is going to be to use a very small bit, such as 1/16" diameter. You should try to begin at least a starter hole before you can use a larger drill that is sized adequately for whatever screw extractor you are going to be using.
• You should make sure to drill carefully and slowly into your damaged screw with the right sized drill bit for the screw extractor based on what the package tells you. The package that comes with your screw extractor will tell you which drill bit is ideal. The pilot hole diameter is likely going to vary based on whichever screw extractor you are using.
• Take care to make sure that you do not break the drill bit off in the hole that you are drilling.

Once you've drilled the appropriate pilot hole, you can insert the screw extractor according to the manufacturer's direction and can apply the right screwing and pressure to remove the broken screw or stripped bolt.

So, is it possible to remove this popcorn ceiling texture once and for all?

It would be nice if the solution to this problem was as easy as 1 - 2 - 3, but it isn't. The problem that comes with a lot of these popcorn ceilings is that a lot of them were installed with asbestos. What this means is that removing this popcorn ceiling from your home may release asbestos particles into the air. The removal of asbestos is an act that has been regulated by the federal government because when asbestos particles become airborne, they become extremely harmful and potentially deadly.

In order to remove the popcorn ceiling texture from your home, you are going to have to hope that it was never painted and is still in its original form. The reason for this is because the only way that you are going to be able to remove it without releasing the asbestos fibers into the air is by saturating the popcorn material through with water while you are taking it down. If it has never been painted, then it is going to fill up with water a lot easier. If on the other hand you have painted your popcorn ceiling at any time, then the chances that you will be able to remove it all by yourself are really not tipping in your favor. This is a process that is more than likely going to require the assistance of a professional contractor that is licensed in the abatement of asbestos.

If after you try out a number of different spray procedures, you still are unable to get water into the popcorn in order to saturate it, then this is a project that you are simply not going to want to take on by yourself. At this point you are either going to want to leave the ceiling untouched and alone, or you are going to want to hire in a professional asbestos abatement contractor that can do the work for you. If you try to remove this ceiling while it is dry, you are going to contaminate the room with asbestos, potentially exposing yourself as well as your family to a potentially high concentration of the airborne fibers. These fibers can remain within your home indefinitely as well.

If your outdoor mailbox is experience a rust problem as a result of oxidation, then you should that removing the rust is something that you can do. After you remove the rust from your mailbox you can take steps to prevent a further build up of rust by painting your mailbox or sealing it with a rust-proof finish.

For this process you are going to need heavy duty steel wool or a wire brush, white vinegar and baking soda, a chemical rust remover, lemon juice, a pair of rubber gloves, a thick shop rag, a mask, paint and a paintbrush.

The first step in the process is to remove the rust, or at least as much of it as you possibly can using the steel wool or wire brush. If you can remove your mailbox, do so, so that you may work on a shop bench or some other sturdy surface. The biggest flakes of rust should scrub off this way. To deal with the trickier rust, you can either make use of a commercial and chemical based remover or you can create your own home made solvent. The materials needed for both are listed already in this article.

Non toxic solvents that you make at home work well for this purpose. You can apply white vinegar much in the same way that you would apply any other chemical cleaner. Scrub the mailbox using the shop rag so that you can get the more resistant rust out with scrubbing. You can also sprinkle baking soda and lemon juice onto the rust areas before scrubbing with the vinegar for good measure. The vinegar and the baking soda will react, creating a foam, and the foam will be powerful enough that it can eat through some of that rust for you. You should plan on doing some decent scrubbing though, because rust really can be persistent. The rust certainly is not going to remove its self.

The next step in the process is going to be to take a brand new, clean shop rag, wetting it down and rinsing off the mail box. Make sure that you dry the mailbox thoroughly following the rinse down to make sure that you do not give the rust a chance to form again.

Finally you are going to want to prevent your mailbox from having rusting issues in the future by applying a rustproof finish or painting it. Both of these options is capable of protecting it from sustaining any further rust, though you should plan on refinishing or repainting occasionally to keep it in good shape.

Remove the Doors

The first step to removing your sliding shower doors is to remove the actual doors of the entire system. Most sliding shower doors can simply be lifted up and off of their tracks – a small amount of give in the track on the ceiling makes this step the easiest step possible. If the doors are large, or if you plan on keeping the doors, find glass suction cup handles. They will help you to keep the door in one piece as you work to pull it out of the frame.

Remove the Tracking

The next step is to simply remove the tracking from the ceiling (or from the top of the shower enclosure). Check to see if any screws were used in the track. If not, you can use a hammer to knock the top track loose, whether it is glued to the ceiling or attached to the overall shower stall piece.

Remove Caulking

Removing the caulking is an important step, as it helps to loosen the frame from the wall. Some choose to perform this step before unscrewing the frame, while others prefer to wait until after. A utility knife will make this job simple and easy.

Unscrew the Frame

This step is one of the most straightforward in the process of removing a sliding shower door. Simply unscrew all of the different screws in the whole frame of the door.  Be cautious as you do so – some pieces may start to come off of the shower or fall down once you have unscrewed them.

Remove the Frame

Once you have unscrewed the entire frame you can start to remove the frame of the sliding shower doors. The side pieces of the doors should come off when unscrewed. Those that stick to the walls or stick to the bottom piece will be able to be taken down with a crow bar and a hammer. Be sure to work slowly and carefully, as you do not want to damage the walls when removing the side pieces of the frame.

Remove Bottom Frame

The bottom part of the frame is the final piece of the sliding shower doors to be removed. Most will be able to use a simple crowbar to pry the bottom part of the shower doors from the surface. If the track sticks, simply use a hammer to jar the piece loose.

The final step in the process is to clean up all of the excess caulking that you may have missed. A utility knife should take care of a majority of the caulk. A caulk remover may be used to remove the final pieces that the knife cannot take care of.
