The temptation may be to buy the most industrial bathroom cleaning product you can find, and scrub like mad with the toilet brush. You can use all these products and scrub all you like, and hard water stains are going to hang on. Bleach, Comet, ammonia, scrubbing foaming sprays, tablets and any number of solutions generally won't make a dent in hard water stains. (Remember to never combine bleach and ammonia. The combination releases a toxic gas that can be lethal.)

The only way to really get those hard water stains out is to get all of the water out of the bowl. You can turn the water off to the toilet and flush until it's empty, pour a bucket of water quickly down the bowl, or try to push the water down through the trap by using a plunger or toilet brush to force it out. It doesn't matter which method you use as long as the water is gone and you can get at the hard water toilet stains.

Now that the water's gone, you can use a scrubbing cleanser and a scrubbing sponge to work at them by hand. While the idea of scrubbing toilet stains by hand isn't very appealing, it's really the only way to thoroughly remove hard water stains. Wear gloves and make sure the room is well-ventilated. Alternately, you can use baking soda as a natural scrub. Use this step just to get the loosest hard water toilet stains off that wouldn't come loose with a toilet brush.

If you have some time and can arrange not to need to use the toilet for a while, you can soak some paper towels or disposable cloths in a citrus-type cleaner, heavy duty bathroom cleaner or even vinegar. Lay them over the stains, and add more fluid as necessary over a few hours to keep them moist. This will dissolve at least some of the stain and let you scrub it away easier. The more hours you keep the stains damp with cleanser or vinegar that's undiluted by water, the more will come off.

After this step, you'll need a pumice stone. Wet the stone and use it to scrub the stains. The pumice is harder than the hard water toilet stains, but it's slightly softer than the porcelain. You can scrub as hard as you need to and you won't scratch or damage the porcelain. And you will need to scrub hard, because hard water stains are some of the toughest around. If you've followed the other steps, only the hardest stain will remain, so plan to spend some time and elbow grease.

Keep the stone wet and scrub until the toilet stains are gone. The same method of cleaning can be used inside the tank, if you wish.

1. Thoroughly clean the refrigerator and oven. The new tenants will probably do this, of course, but if you leave anything in these it can be grounds for the landlord to keep your deposit for cleaning costs. Do this early, especially the oven, so that the odors are gone before you leave.

One of the most common causes of a toilet leak is that the wax ring that is found inside the toilet near its bottom gets worn out. If this is the case, then the fix is a relatively easy and inexpensive one, it just takes a little bit of effort since you need to unmount the entire toilet in order to get to it.

As with any other toilet repair, the first thing that you’ll want to do is shut off the water flow to the toilet. Usually, there’s a valve right behind the toilet that does this. After you’ve turned the valve, flush the toilet a few times to drain as much water as you can. No extra water should flow into the bowl – if it does then you need to turn the valve tighter. After draining the bowl, soak up the remaining water with a sponge.

Once that’s done, then next step is to prepare to unmount the toilet to get at the source of the toilet leak. You will find some nuts on the base of the toilet that are used to hold it in place. Simply use a wrench to remove them – you may need to remove their plastic coverings with a wedge first.

Those nuts are actually all that holds the toilet in place, so now you can simply lift the toilet away carefully. Once that’s done, you should see the opening in the floor where the toilet’s plumbing begins. Find some way to plug up the hole to ensure nothing comes back at you, and then you’re ready to solve your toilet leak problem.

If the wax ring is in fact the problem, the wear and degradation should be obvious. Use a wedge to pry off what remains of the old ring both from the base of the toilet and from the pipes. There should be space for you to insert the wax ring into the base of the toilet. Once that step is completed, all you have to do is carefully line up the toilet with its plumbing and the bolts in the floor. Once you’ve remounted the toilet and secured the bolts, you’re done.

More oft than not, the leak is caused by a worn or broken wax ring. If the toilet in question is not firmly bolted to the floor, then it can rock. After time, all of this rocking can make the ring work itself loose. Not to worry, this is a very easy procedure to do. Turn off the water supply at the wall.

Flush the toilet once more to drain the tank and the bowl. A little bit of water will still be left in the toilet, and this is nothing for you to worry about. Disconnect the water supply, and then loosen the bolts on the floor. Once the toilet is completely loosened, just pull straight up to remove the toilet. The old wax ring should still be sitting on the drain pipe flange. Use your scraper tool to remove it.

We are being hopeful that you were thinking ahead and bough a new wax ring for the toilet before starting this whole entire project. A new wax ring should not cost more than roughly $3 dollars. Place the new ring on the floor flange, and then set the toilet back into place. Push the toilet downward with some elbow grease to be sure the wax gasket seals properly. Now you are going to want to put the toilet back down to the floor, ensuring in the process that it is firm so that the toilet does not rock. Make sure that you do not crack the porcelain material by over tightening your bolts.

After you have managed to figure out all of the basic principles for operating your toilet, it is definitely going to be fairly easy and fairly inexpensive for you to learn how to maintain it. We have dealt with only one of the most common issues that happens to toilets. When you learn how to deal with common issues like this, it will become more easy for you to deal with common problems that are related to the toilet. The more proficient that you become with fixing your own toilet, the cheaper it will be in general since you will no longer have to hire a plumber. Most toilet fixes can be done for as little as $15 dollars, so fixing your toilet yourself is definitely the best way to go. You are going to want to keep in mind that when you are working with the toilet, wearing gloves is always a must, especially when you are relocating the bowl of the toilet from the floor flange.
