Holes in the wall are pretty shocking when it happens, but luckily, this is a fix that most people can do on their own. There are a few exceptions, such as if the hole is overly large or if there may be underlying damage that is structural. However, in most cases, you can easily fix a small hole in the wall very easily. You will need to have a few tools and materials on hand before you get started.

We recommend:

drywall putty

a flour sack

sandpaper

paint to match the wall

a painter's knife

First, you'll need to determine how bad the hole is. If it's a simple cosmetic hole, the fix will be pretty easy and you may not need to worry about filling the area. However, if you've got a pretty large hole, it's a good idea to stuff something in there to make it easier to fill. A flour sack works very well for this purpose, and can make it easier to get the job done quickly. You may also want to get a special kit from the hardware store that will have filler that can be inserted into the hole.

Once you've got the hole filled, it's time to cover it up. Grab your drywall putty and your painter's knife and get started. You'll want to use a spackle motion to apply the putty to the wall. Overlap the hole as you go to create a strong bond. Make sure that you don't use too much or you'll end up with a mess on your hand. Too little however and you won't be able to get the job done. Instead of glopping it on all at once, gradually apply the putty until the area is even and filled in.

Now, you're going to need to let this dry before proceeding to the next step. It may take a few hours depending on the type of putty you used. Make sure you read the instructions so that you're not jumping the gun. When the putty is completely dry to the touch, get your sandpaper and smooth out the area. You'll need to make a few passes to get everything smoothed out and even with the rest of the wall.

Once you've finished this, you'll be able to paint over the area. Most drywall putty is taupe or light brown in color so you won't have to worry too much about covering it up with paint. If the wall is white, you're probably going to need to add a few coats to prevent see through. Let the paint dry completely before you quit to make sure that it looks right.

It is important to address a common technique that many people use as a shortcut. If you've got a small hole in the wall and you're a renter, you can easily make it look as though it's fixed by adding a little white toothpaste to the area. For bigger holes, some people like to try mixing flour and water to create a paste and using a sheet to cover the hole. We don't recommend this fix since it is not permanent.

If you’re living in a glorified shoebox, it can be pretty depressing after awhile. Not all of us can afford the best apartments or houses and chances are you’re dealing with at least one room that is little more than a closet. While you may not be able to knock down a few walls, there are a few techniques that you can use to make that space feel and look a lot bigger.

1. Use light colors.

Light paint really does make a difference, but don’t stop there. Stick to very pale, neutral colors with furniture and floor coverings as well. This can make a tiny room look quite large when utilized correctly. Think as pale as possible and limit any bright colors to throw pillows or small pictures. Light drapes or window coverings will also help make the room seem bigger.

2. Downsize your decorating.

A small room with a really big couch is going to feel that much smaller. Use a loveseat instead or a double sized chair. The same is true with pictures. Keep your big pictures to the big rooms and use smaller pictures in your smaller rooms. Resist the urge to overdo! Remember, one small painting in the middle of the wall will not only pull the eye, but it will make the space around it seem bigger.

3. Draw the eyes upward.

Although borders are a bit passé, they can be very useful when you’re dealing with a narrow room that has higher ceilings. This trick will not work however if you have low ceilings, it will just make them seem that much lower. In this case, paint the ceiling a very bright white. It will give the illusion that it is taller and that there is more overall space.

4. Use the right kind of lighting.

When light is properly used in a room, it makes it seem bigger. Keep lamps to the perimeter of the room and make sure that they have light shades to minimize shadows. Use your ceiling lights instead to once again draw the eye upward and illuminate the entire space.

5. Make use of the flooring.

Let’s say that you have a very square room that is quite small. In this case, you would want to run your flooring vertically, either with tile or wood. Wood floors are a great choice for a small room. You won’t be spending much money and they have the effect of elongating or widening a room when placed in the right direction. Before you make it permanent, lay down a few boards in the room and see if it makes it feel bigger or smaller. When using throw rugs over your wood floors, go a little bit smaller so that the space on the floor looks bigger.

6. Don’t over accessorize.

A room with clutter instantly feels small. Keep the knick-knacks to a minimum in a small room and use shelves when necessary. Your goal is to create an almost Spartan space, that will feel much more open and airy.

Most of us go to the bathroom to freshen up, but there are a few easy tips you can use to freshen up the entire room. If your bathroom is getting a little boring, or you’re just sick of how it looks, these tips will help you save money and help transform your bathroom into a calm oasis.

1. Start small.

Sometimes it is the little things that really make a difference. Put all of your typical bathroom clutter away and purchase a few small baskets. Roll up some hand towels or washcloths and place them in the basket. Purchase some scented soaps or bath marbles and fill the other baskets with these. Place the baskets around the room for a spa treatment. Your bathroom will immediately feel bigger and more inviting.

2. Increase the use of your space.

You may not be able to increase the actual space in your bathroom, but you can increase the amount of usable space. First, let’s talk about bathrooms without any linen closets or storage areas. It can be pretty frustrating to try to store all of the stuff you need every day without dealing with clutter. The best solution is to get either an over-the-door organizer, or a sturdy cabinet that will fit behind the toilet area.

These are terrific space savers and will help you get organized in no time at all. We mentioned the cabinet for the toilet area should be sturdy and this is vital. Many people make the mistake of just slapping a cabinet into this area and fail to secure it properly. Their reward is a knock on the head when they sit down or jostle the cabinet.

If you’re going to use this type of cabinet, install a loop on the back of the cabinet. Now, on the wall where the cabinet will be resting, install a hook. When you put the cabinet up, hook the loop. Just make sure that it is sturdy enough to hold the entire cabinet. Even a common hook and catch for a door will work for this, if it is strong enough.

3. Move the hamper.

If you’re dealing with a very small space, adding a hamper will only hamper your movements. Try placing this in your bedroom or even the laundry room. Make the trip to it with your dirty clothes as necessary. While hampers are great organizational tools, they can get in the way.

4. Make it neutral.

If all else fails and you’ve removed everything you can, adding a little light paint and light flooring will make the room feel a lot bigger. You won’t feel as cramped. Adding the right lighting can also be of great assistance for making this small space seem bigger. Experiment with a few options until you find the right lighting for your bathroom.

We may not spend a lot of time in our bathrooms, but the time we do spend should be relaxing. These tips will help you get more use out of your space and help you feel a lot less cramped.

Whether you’re hanging a picture or thinking about adding a door, finding hidden wall studs is no easy task. There is of course the method of thumping on the wall, but this is not very accurate and there is a lot of room for error. If you’re dealing with a big improvement project, you’ve got to know how to easily find hidden wall studs with a great percentage of accuracy. So, let’s get started on two easy ways to get this done.

1. Purchase a stud finder.

Even if you only use it occasionally, a stud finder will pay for itself with just one use. These can be purchased at any hardware or home improvement store and are usually priced at less than $100. Today’s models use a variety of different electronic techniques to help locate hidden studs and will provide you with an exact position for any stud in any wall.

When you can’t afford to be wrong by a few inches, this is probably the best solution. They are a little expensive, but you’ll be saving money by using the proper position for hanging pictures, cutting in a door way or avoiding electrical wires. For those that are interested in DIY but don’t have a lot of experience, this is a vital piece of equipment that is well worth the money.

2. This next method is one used by a lot of people, but it does require a little bit of effort.

If you have plaster walls, you can locate studs simply by putting a nail in the wall every few inches by the baseboard. When you run into the stud, you won’t be able to just push the nail in. While this is a pretty accurate method for locating studs, not many people want to put a dozen holes in the walls while they try.

If you simply do not want to purchase a stud finder, this is an easy but destructive alternative. We do not recommend trying this technique in walls where this is electrical wiring, simply because it is all to easy to stick your nail in the wrong spot.

3. Here’s an old fashioned method that gets the job done when you’re in a pinch.

Grab a flashlight and dim the lights in the room. Now, hold the flashlight sideways on the wall, so that the beam is illuminating the entire section of wall. Look carefully in the wall for any signs that framing nails may have been used. You should be able to see some dents or depressions where this occurred.

This method is incredibly time consuming and may not be accurate. For example, the dent you think is from a framing nail may just be an old dent in the wall. When you need accuracy, the single best solution is a stud finder. You can always look for them during special sales if you’re trying to save money. However, it is money well spent, at least in this situation.

One home repair job that is DIY in nature and quite effective is to patch breaks in a wall in your basement. This is nevertheless important to the vital structures of your home; despite how simple and straight forward it can be to do. Before you begin the project, you should keep an eye on the area requiring patching for a few months to make sure that the holes or breaks are not a sign of something more serious at play such as a sign of a major structural problem. If the problem area does not seem to stabilize, but appears to be getting worse over time, then the project is no longer DIY in nature and will require the assistance of a repairing building contractor or an ordinary building contractor.

First and foremost, assess the concrete wall in your basement. If the damage appears to be leaking, then you should be using plugging cement that is quick hardening, or a concrete epoxy to fill it in. When you mix the cement for the dry patch spots, you should be using one part cement mixed with two parts of sand in order to make a mortar. You should slowly add water in until you have a dough like consistency, stirring well along the way.

Should a new leak spring up in an area close to the repair site, then there may be water that is backing up against the foundation's exterior, and this can be a serious problem. As a result, you are going to have to take more drastic measures with the help of a repairing building contractor as leak repair measures must be taken before this problem becomes any more serious or any more significant.

If you have a hole in your cement, here is what you can do: You can use a cold chisel to make the hole bigger, undercutting edges so that the plug is not going to pop loose. You can mix plugging cement, creating a stopper shape that you can pop right into the hole as if it were a cork. Keep it in place for a few minutes and let it harden.

If you are dealing with cracks in your cement, here is what you can do: You can use a hammer and a chisel in order to cut cracks back to the sound material, beveling the edges. Then moisten the cracks really well. Turn the mortar several times using a trowel, then work the well mixed mortar into the cracks using just the very tip of the trowel. One the mortar is beginning to harden, you can pack the crack completely full. Shave off whatever mortar is extra using a putty knife or a wet trowel and let everything harden.
