It is a problem that has happened to all of us. You go in for a hot shower, only to find that there is no more hot water. You have come to the decision it is time to replace you hot water heater with one that has more capacity. The problem is that larger hot water heaters consume more energy, which will definitely have an impact upon your utilities bill. What you should be considering is a tankless water heater. Much like on demand service offered by TV providers nowadays, these heat the water only when it is needed. So you are not paying to keep many gallons of water at a high temperature. Further, these devices free up storage space, and can qualify for tax credits due to their energy saving nature.

Now everything has its limitations and compromises, and you should take them under consideration. Different models will draw upon different sources of power in heating the water, some electric, some gas. Different models will have varying scopes of application; where some might be attached to where they will be used, others will attach and provide for the whole home. The size of unit does determine the capacity for water usage. There are a number of different things that should be considered before you make the change.

Surprisingly enough, the tankless water heater has no tank. It creates hot water as required without storing any excess. This results in no loss from hot water being stored, and is the primary source of the claim of energy efficiency. These heaters take in cold water and is heated by a heating element, much like the water you put into a water heater. The source of heat can be gas, electric, propane. Gas and propane can typically heat much more than electric, and are suited for whole house units. What determines the capability of the water heater is the temperature of the cold water, the temperature of the desired hot water, and the flow of water.

Whole house heaters have a larger flow of water and can handle more than one faucet in the home. Different fixtures need different amounts of flow, as a shower head can use 5 or 6 times more water than a sink. When it comes time to determine the type, size and numbers of heaters that you will need, you will need to think of how many hot water sources will likely be on at a time, and the total flow you may need. You will also need to consider the region you live in, since farther from the equator equates to colder climates and a colder baseline.

All of these factors need to go into the decision to get a tankless water heater. You should consider the over all energy gain of buying one, savings that you will receive in tax benefits and energy reduction, and compare it to the initial setup cost, and any limitations as to range of capability for the unit.

There are a number of techniques that you can do to reduce your heating costs. Here is a list of tips and techniques to give you the ability to reduce your heating bill.

1 - Find a warm pair of socks.

Sounds silly, but feet that are cold will send that feeling all over the body. Making a point to wear socks or slippers around during the cold days. If you are still feeling cold, you can add layers and bundle up.

2 - Make use of the heat that is available.

There are activities that you can do which generate warmth around the house. Cooking a meal or taking a shower are simple ways to get heat. Keeping the door open while taking a shower will allow the steam to escape into the rest of the house, putting some of that excess heat to better use. Just be sure not to turn on the ventilation fan, as it will remove the precious heat you are creating.

3 - Trim the thermostat by two or three degrees.

You will not really notice the change until you get your bill, when you notice that you have shaved up to ten percent off of your heating bill. If you will be leaving the home for several hours, it can also save you money to turn the thermostat down.

4 - Turn down the water heater.

This is another adjustment that can be hard to notice. Turning down the water heater will save as much energy as the thermostat adjustment.

5 - Upgrade the thermostat.

Buy a programmable thermostat, typically costing no more than $100. That money will be made back when the thermostat will only heat the home while you are home, setting the temperature lower for when you are at work or sleeping.

6 - Keep the heat that you have.

Make sure that doors and windows are shut. Leaving them open will let heat out and make the system work much more harder than it has to. If you have a fireplace, make sure to keep the flue closed and that glass doors covering the fireplace are closed. Also make sure that ventilation systems are turned off when they are not needed.

7 - Get a home physical.

Just as you go in for a check up every year, you should call a professional to come in and make sure proper maintenance is performed on your systems. This will ensure that your systems are running efficiently and in a most cost effective manner. You should also make sure that all filters are clean.

8 - Cover your windows when it is dark.

With out the sun working to heat the home from the outside, uncovered windows will let heat out of the home. Conversely, have windows open during the day to let heat into the home.

9. Examine your home from the outside.

Check your heating unit, making sure that anything that is up against it is removed and prevented from blocking air flow. Use a hose to clear off dirt and debris from the unit. If there is excess water, there may be a condensate drainage problem.

A water heater is an essential appliance that is commonly overlooked in many homes. Typically they will provide years of service, and you may never realize that it is either terribly inefficient or even faulty. Here are some tips to help you determine whether your current water heater should be replaced and how to find a brand new one.

First and foremost, it is important to consider energy efficiency. Propane water heaters can be more efficient than electric, but the rising cost of propane is leaving many to consider making the switch to electric. However, electric water heaters, especially older models, can be an incredible drain on your energy.

If your water heater is more than ten years old, chances are it is not as efficient as today’s models. The new Energy Star guidelines have made quite a change in the industry and water heaters that are built today can typically be run all year round for around $20 to $40. Compare that with older models that cost in excess of $60 a year, and you can easily pay for a new water heater in less than two years.

Another common complaint with water heaters is scalding. Whether it’s from someone else in the house flushing a toilet, or running a sink, scalds are very common. This can be very dangerous with young children in the house and no one really appreciates getting scalded with hot water, or frozen with cold.

If your water heater does not have a safety setting that will prevent scalds, it is definitely time to consider replacing it. Today’s models have built in features that can reduce the risk for scalding, and they are much more child friendly. If replacement is not an option, you may want to consider turning the thermostat on your water heater down to reduce the overall temperature of the water in your home. This is an easy fix that can prevent terrible burns.

Another common complaint with older water heaters is capacity, or overall efficiency when it comes to producing hot water on a regular basis. For example, if you have four people in the home, chances are if your water heater is cold, one or more of them will be taking a cold shower if you all go in a row.

Look for a water heater with a bigger capacity in this situation. Forty to fifty gallons is usually appropriate for a bigger family, but depending on water usage and the length of showers, you may need to go bigger. It’s really almost impossible to have a water heater that is too big, unless you are the only person in the home.

Last but not least, there is a tip that many people do not know about. During the summer months, the water in your home’s well or water supply is naturally warmer. Reduce the risks of scalds by turning down your water heater’s thermometer during the summer months. This can also help you save money on energy costs during the summer months.
