Calculating Your Area Carpet
October 21st, 2009 | Handy Man, carpet
Calculating the carpet area is a math calculation that is both straight forward and simple, but planning out the installation for your carpet area can really make a big difference in how much carpet you are actually going to need in order to suit your particular remodeling project. Here are two tips for calculating the carpet area that are going to steer your project in the right direction, ensuring that you end up with the right amount of carpet for your flooring needs.
Carpet Area Tip #1 – Measuring the Room
Using a measuring tape, you are going to want to carefully measure both the length and the width of whatever room you are planning on carpeting. If the room has an alcove or an L-shaped leg, then you are going to want to measure that part of the room separately. Now you are going to want to take the width and the length of the room and multiply them together so that the number you end up with is the room area, or the square footage for the room. As an example, if the room that you are dealing with has a length of 12 feet and a width of 12 feet, then the square footage or area is 144 feet.
If you have a room leg or an alcove, then you are going to want to perform the same set of measurements and mathematics for both the main portion of the room and the smaller portion, and then you are going to want to add the two square footage measurements together to get a total square footage for the room.
Carpet Area Tip #2 – Planning for the Layout
Now, before you go and purchase the carpeting that you are interested in, you are going to want to take the time out to draw out a sketch of the room on graph paper or similar. This is going to allow you to plan out exactly how you want for the carpet to be laid, especially if you have a room that is especially large, or a room that has an unusual shape.
Larger rooms typically require seams in your carpet. When you have a diagram of your room, then you are going to be able to determine where the seams are going to fall. Carpeting seams are generally placed best in areas that do not have high foot traffic, so that there will be less wear on the carpet edges. If you are purchasing a type of carpet that is woven, such as Berber for example, then planning out your carpeting seams is going to be especially important.
As far as seams go, look at it this way: You do not want these seams to be visible, so it is well worth the extra time and effort that goes into planning them if it makes it so nobody can tell that they are present.
