Do-it-yourself ceiling fan installation can save you money both on the installation and your home's heating and cooling costs. While running the fan in the summer can cool a room and give your air conditioner a break, running a ceiling fan on low in the winter can help distribute warm air better, too. Your ceiling fan installation will replace the ceiling light fixture in the center of the room. If you don't have a ceiling fixture, you'll have to cut the hole and connect the lighted fan to the wiring, which you might want to call a professional to do for you.
Make sure that there's at least 7' between the floor and the blades of your fan before you start the ceiling fan installation. It's also a good idea to check your local building codes to make sure there's not a larger height requirement.
1. Assemble the fan. Each fan will have its own instructions on how to do this. It's almost always better to attach the blades before you hang the fan, however.
2. Turn off power. As with any project involving electricity, turn off the power and remove the light fixture before the ceiling fan installation.
3. What is the junction box made of? If the junction box that held the light fixture is metal, you can mount a fan that weights up to about 30 pounds. If the box is plastic or the fan is heavier, then you'll need to mount the fan to a ceiling beam for safety.
4. Follow the fan manufacturer instructions carefully, because there could be variations. But in general, the next step would be to install what's known as the hanger pipe, that goes on top of the motor. This pipe is used to house the wires. There also could be things at this step like a decorative cover.
5. Mount the hanger bracket. If the hanger bracket that comes with the fan doesn't have washers, use some anyway. This can help lessen the vibrations when the fan is running.
6. Install the wiring. Make sure that you connect black to black and white to white, then install the cover and tighten. Attach the grounding wires, which are usually bare or green. Your ceiling fan installation is done.
Once you turn the power back on and test the fan, it's not uncommon to find that it doesn't run smoothly but wobbles instead. This is usually caused by one side being heavier than the other and throwing the fan off balance. Not only is it annoying, but it can cause damage to the fan over time.
To remedy the problem, first remove two fan blades that are next to each other and switch their positions. If this doesn't work, remove all the blades and use a postal or food scale to weight them. Tape something very lightweight to the top of a low weight blade, like clay or an eraser, to bring them to the same weight. Alternately, you can top off your ceiling fan installation with a fan balancing kit.

It was briefly mentioned in the article above that a properly installed and operated ceiling fan can save you on heating and cooling cost. It can actually save you up to 40% on cooling bills and up to 10% on heating bills. The way this works is by controlling the direction of rotation of the fan blades. Most fans have a switch located on the ceiling fan housing that allows you to change the direction that the fan blades rotate. You want them to rotate so as to push the air down and create a cooling breeze in the summer, but during the winter you want the fan blades to rotate in the opposite direction. This allows the ceiling fan to pull up the cool air and redistribute the warm air near the ceiling back down into the room. There are some interesting and informative videos at http://www.HunterCeilingFanStore.com/Ceiling-Fan-Videos.html That help demonstrate this and give you more tips and information that will help you to make a wise choice in buying a ceiling fan.
