Your home workshop is unfortunately one of the more dangerous places that children can venture. Many workshops contain sharp tools, sharp objects, tiny items that can be easily picked up and ingested and many other dangers. However, there are a number of simple and safe ways that you can childproof the more dangerous elements of your workshop.
Childproofing Tip #1 - You should begin with the large items and large objects within your workshop for the best results. The large stationary types of power tools should be unplugged whenever they are not in use. You can install childproof outlet locks in order to keep children from plugging the power tools in when you are not there to supervise them. If you have a key-operated power lock then you can power all of your tools down at one time with a single switch. You should also make sure that any blades within reach have protective covers.
Childproofing Tip #2 - The next tip for you to consider is for you to secure any items that might be capable of falling down. Children especially love to climb, and you are going to want to prevent these things from tumbling down on top of them.
Childproofing Tip #3 - Now you are going to want to secure any and all loose items. You should have cabinets in your workshop that are capable of being locked. You can sort your smaller items into jars and other containers to make sure that small parts are kept completely out of the reach of children. By making these cabinets lockable you can ensure that nobody will touch your tools or small pieces unless you are there supervising.
Childproofing Tip #4 - Make sure that you are storing chemicals correctly, because chemicals are one of the most dangerous of all items in your workshop. Solvents, paints, fertilizers and lubricants should absolutely never be stored in packaging that your children can easily get into. Chemicals should always be stored in original packaging in lockable cabinets that cannot be reached by children.
Childproofing Tip #5 - Store or remove any and all choking hazards so that your children cannot reach them. Make sure that you are disposing of any and all plastic bags and any debris that a child could potentially choke on. You are also going to want to lock away ropes, cords, drop cloths and other items carefully as these items are capable of posing as a choking hazard.
These childproofing safety tips are simple, but they really do go a long way in protecting you from allowing a child to become sick or injured while in your workshop. Things that seem like common knowledge to us are not the same for children, who are likely to taste things or touch things that they do not perceive to be harmful. Work hard to childproof your workshop and it will pay off when your children learn the healthy, safe way to be around tools.
