Extra Storage Space in the Home
September 2nd, 2009 | Handy Man, Storage, Walls, closets, furniture
If there is one problem that just about everyone has, it is the issue of having too much stuff—and not enough room in which to store it. Ask nearly any homeowner and she will likely tell you that her home does not have enough storage space. Regardless of how large or how small a home is, most homes were simply not built with enough attention to this matter.
There are, however, ways to find extra storage space in any home. Homeowners tend to overlook some hidden storage areas. In addition, by getting a little creative, extra space can be added without compromising the other household areas. Here are a few easy ways to find extra storage space in any home:
Look Up for Extra Space
Take a look around the upper perimeter of every room. Chances are, there is nothing there. This is a great deal of unused space—and this could be used for storage. You could easily install a shelf up high in any room and use it to store books. Place a few decorative baskets or boxes on the shelf and use them to store anything at all. Or, hang a series of hooks around the wall near the ceiling and use the hooks to store baseball caps or wicker baskets or a child’s stuffed plush. Try using the upper wall space in any room that you can, as this can help to provide extra storage space in any room.
Look at Your Walls
If there is blank space on any of your walls, think about storage. In a kitchen, install hooks on which you can hang utensils or pots and pans. Try hanging a small wooden cabinet with doors in your hallway; you could use this for first aid supplies, for example, or for an in-home hardware station (instead of having a ‘junk’ drawer somewhere). Wire racks work well in children’s rooms to corral all of the extra toys. Basically, try to look for decorative products that can hang on your walls and that will work for storage.
Look Under Your Furniture
Many homeowners tend to forget about the space that is underneath their furniture—and this is good extra storage space because it is well-hidden from the public eye. Using the space under beds is especially practical. Use plastic storage containers or extra-large zipper seal bags to store spare blankets and comforters. These containers can also be used to keep out-of-season clothing safe and dry until the following year. Shoes are another item which can be stored under a bed, as there are special racks built just for this purpose.
Look in Your Closets
Yes, closets are already used for storage. But, there may be unused space inside some closets. Many people do not use the space up near the closet ceiling. Also, some closets are deep; in these, there is often additional empty space at the back of the closet. Installing extra shelves can help to make any closet more useful and will create more extra storage space.
