First Aid in Home Repairs, pt1

firstaidkitHere is a basic guide to dealing with first aid issues in home repair and home renovation projects.

Severe Bleeding:

In order to stop severe bleeding, direct pressure needs to be applied to the wound using a compress or a pad. You can use any clean cloth that is available for this purpose. Do not remove the compress from the wound to check if bleeding has stopped. If the bleeding is severe, call an ambulance or make a trip to the hospital.

Arm and Leg Wounds:

Direct pressure should be applied to the wound, and the limb should be raised using a piece of furniture, pillows or rolled up clothing. If pressure does not cause the bleeding to stop, press hard on the associated pressure point with fingers or the heel of the hand and phone a doctor immediately.

Electric Shock:

Electric power should be turned off immediately. To remove a victim from electrical wire, a completely dry item such as rope, a dry shirt, a looped belt or a broom handle should be used. If the victim is not breathing, then artificial breathing needs to begin immediately, and should not stop until the victim is breathing well on their own or if help arrives and a hospital needs to be phoned immediately.

Eye Injury from Chemical Exposure:

When eye injuries are caused by exposure to a chemical, a delay of mere seconds can greatly increase the amount of damage and injury sustained in the eye. The eyelids should be held open and then promptly rinsed with a gentle stream of warm water for a period of at least 15 minutes. The victim should be taken to an eye specialist or to the hospital immediately. An eye cup should not be used. Eye drops or other drugs should not be used as they may actually increase the amount of injury sustained.

Skin Injury from Chemical Exposure:

When a skin injury is caused by a chemical, the skin should immediately be flushed with plenty of warm water, followed by soap and water. The area should be covered up by a loose and clean piece of cloth. You should not use any ointments or grease on the wound.

Burns:

If the skin is broken, you should take care not to touch it. The burn should be wrapped using loosely wrapped sterile gauze, and paramedics or a doctor should be phoned immediately. If clothing is stuck to the burn, do not remove it. Smaller burns can be immediately immersed in cold water or cooled down using ice before being wrapped up with sterile gauze. Grease or ointments should not be used. Cloth with loose types of fibers should not be used to wrap the wound.

Fractures:

For any and all types of bone fractures, you immediately need to keep the area from being moved. You need to apply a splint if the injured person needs to be moved. Medical help needs to be obtained as quickly as possible.
