You can also get a feel for the ergonomics of the grip and decide if it will be comfortable before you buy. After you have decided on the trimmer you want, check online to see if you can find a used model at a lower price. Trimmers are very durable, so there is not much drop off in quality with a secondhand trimmer.
The power you will need depends on the size of your yard and what you will be cutting through. Thicker grass will require significantly more power than a light trim job. For most small home jobs, a 2-cycle, 20cc displacement engine will be sufficient. If you have a small yard, you may be able to save money and buy an electric trimmer. Electric trimmers are far more portable and lightweight than gas models, but can only reach a limited area because of the cord.
