Getting Through the Winter With an Unfinished Home Project

All it takes is an injury or miscalculation of funds or supplies to set your installation, restoration, or addition project back days, weeks, or months. No amount of anticipating in the world can plan for things that might keep your construction from being complete before the unforgiving months of winter set in. In the event that your hard work remains in a raw state exposed to the elements and at risk for destruction, steps must be taken to ensure the project survives in tact till spring. But more importantly you must make sure you set the right chain of events into motion that will allow you to remain motivated to complete the work once things start to warm up.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered.

1. Signed: Know what red tape awaits and what is no longer necessary.

If your building permits are set to expire make sure that you know what needs to be reapplied for when spring arrives. The best time to do an inventory on what's been completed and what hasn't is before you winterize your work. You might not be applying for another permit until spring but in order to save yourself money and hassle keep track of what you've done so that you aren't forced to guess later on.

2. Sealed: Make sure your work is preserved.

Rain, sleet, snow, and ice can be devastating on construction caught in a halfway point. It's vital you cover all wiring installed in individual sealed sections, with several tarps tightly wrapped around all exposed wood. Even if there is a roof and windows already in place, you want to make sure there aren't any tools lying around that can be damaged in the freezing temperatures, or worse deteriorate to the point of malfunction. Winterizing your home improvement project is essential.

3. Delivered: Store your displaced items.

In the event of a renovation it's imperative that all clutter as a result of displaced furniture and other items be stowed somewhere that isn't in the way. While you shouldn't allow yourself to get relaxed into never finishing what you started, having the constant clutter in your face can force you to make impatient decisions like hiring a contractor to finish the job or committing to rushed construction methods. Putting your items into a StorageMart or some other kind of long-term storage facility is a great option because it removes the clutter while keeping the project always on your mind in the form of the monthly storage fees.

Home improvement projects aren't cheap so don't risk the money on top of your hard work by not taking enough precautions in protecting your unfinished project and ensuring you stick to it. The value of your home is important, but the value of your determination and forethought is worth much more.
