Guide to Landscaping Tools

wheelNo matter what type of home maintenance or repair job you’re doing, it pays to have the right tools, and landscaping is no different. While some elements of a good landscaping job don’t actually require any tools, having some available makes those tasks quite a bit easier. Other parts of a landscaping would be impossible or to do without the aid of tools. If you’re planning to do your own landscaping this year, then you should take the time to figure out what kind of tools you’re going to want to add to your collection.

Before you decide on what type of landscaping tools to get, you have to take into account the scope of your landscaping project. If all you want to do is keep your yard looking clean and orderly, then you’ll only need the bare minimum number of tools. However, if you have a lot of trees, hedges and flower beds around your home, then you may want to expand your tool collection to include some more specialized tools.

If you have flower beds and trees around your home, then one of the ways that you can help beautify the landscape is by adding mulch. Mulching adds a clean look to flower beds or to the areas around the base of the trees, and it also makes the soil there healthier. In order to make mulching easier, it helps to have a wheelbarrow to transport the mulch around and a shovel to take the mulch in and out of the wheelbarrow. Having a gardening rake is also helpful for spreading the mulch around evenly.

Another important element of landscaping is edging. Edging helps to give a flower bed or other landscape feature more definition and it can also help to protect it from weeds and grasses that might get into it. In order to make a proper edge, you need an edging shovel or spade. A normal shovel just doesn’t have the right shape. Edging shovels are flat instead of pointed, making them useful landscaping tools for this purpose.

You’ll probably also want to add some sort of weeding tool to your list of landscaping tools to purchase. Weeding can be done by hand, but doing so is a tedious process that no one really enjoys. There are all kinds of different weeding tools out there to help make the process a little bit less frustrating. A good weeding tool also has the advantage of helping to get right to the root of the weeds to make sure that they don’t come back.

If you have hedges on your property, then you’ll also want to have some sort of tool to help keep the hedges under control. It’s possible to just use a pair of clippers to cut away the wild branches on a hedge, but that can take hours and hours to do. It’s much easier to just use a motorized hedge trimmer. It’s one of the more expensive types of landscaping tools, but it gets the job done quickly and efficiently.
