Measuring tools are any devices that are designed to measure the height, the width, the length or the levelness. Layout tools are instruments that are used to create circles, angles, lines or to mark work pieces. Tools that the home mechanic may use will include tapes, rulers, squares, levels, dividers, chalk lines, center punches, and awls.
Rule - The folding wooden rule is used for the purpose of measuring across a wide opening. One of the biggest advantages to using a rule is that you can measure heights without requiring two people and the use of a ladder. The folding rule is the only type of rigid scale available that can be folded and put away in your pocket. When it comes to measuring horizontal distances using an unsupported rule, you should make sure that the numbers are not facing the floor or the ceiling. The folding rule is capable of being extended farther if the numbers are facing to the right or to the left. You should make sure to avoid dropping a rule on its end because the joints can loosen up to the point where visible errors are caused. Every single joint offset is capable of adding several feet or more.
Tapes - The most compact of all general purpose length scales is the steel tape measure. This tape rule is preferred by many workers because it is accurate and also because it significantly speeds up the job of measuring. There is a spring located inside the case that rules the tape up quite quickly. On the end of the tape there is a hook that is designed to catch the work piece's edge. This is a true zero hook that is capable of sliding on its mounting pins, giving the true accuracy of a true zero point no matter which way the hook is pointing. The purpose here is to allow for the hook tab's thickness to be accommodated for both methods of measuring.
Steel tape measures can come in a wide variety of different widths and lengths including 3 foot or 1 m lengths to 20 foot to 6 m lengths, though there are much longer tapes as well. A special advantage that is associated with the steel tape measure is that it offers flexibility, and can be used to measure twisting shapes, curves and straight shapes alike.
Measuring tapes that cannot retract with the use of a single hand is a bother, so the tape measure needs to be kept clean so that it can be allowed to work smoothly. There are a number of substances that need to be kept away from the tape including glue, paint, tar, caulking, wall patching and debris from sanding. Tape wear and tape breakage is sometimes unavoidable however. Some manufacturers will repair broken tapes free of charge.
