Guide to Measuring and Marking Tools pt 2

squareSquares - Squares are designed to be used in a way that allows them to lay out an angle that is accurate. Squares also make good accurate testing gauges for checking the angle of an existing part. The smallest square is the try square, which is used to try a surface to see if its edges are square as well as to lay out lines in right angles in comparison to an edge. Some of these try squares are capable of checking at 45 degree angles. Try squares can be found with blades from 6 inches to 12 inches or 15 cm to 31 cm long. Handles are typically either brass trimmed wood or metal.

Another device that is used for the purpose of measuring 90 degree and 45 degree angles is the combination square. There are two serious advantages brought about by the combination square. First and foremost, the square is capable of being used when the checked piece is near the center of another surface's gap. The scale of the combination square is capable of extending across the opening once the measuring head has been centered. The scale of the try square could tip into the hole when you attempt to make the head line up. The second great advantage is that the sliding head of the combination square makes it possible for you to use this device as if it were a depth gauge.

The square's head nearly always has a level vial on it to make the layout of horizontal lines and plumb lines easier. There is also a third type of square, which is a carpenter's square, and this one is used to lay out stair framing and roof rafters. The home mechanic is only going to need this type of square for projects that involve large objects. The squares do not require much care at all. If a try square is dropped it may have difficulty keeping its accuracy. This is much more pronounced than for the other types of squares, because the other squares rely on their larger area.

Make sure to keep your combination square away from any electrical sources because there are parts that could potentially become welded together. To maintain steel square surfaces you should use a furniture polish based in lemon oil. The lemon oil will protect as well as lubricate but it will not attract dirt in any way.

All of these squares can find their way into the modern home builder or wood worker's workshop. Make sure that you have the right square for the right job, because obviously different squares are intended for different purposes. Using the right square for the right job is important, since incorrectly using a square could lead to damage to the square or an incorrect measurement, throwing an entire project off in the process.
