Guide to Measuring and Marking Tools pt 3

levelsLevels - Tools that are capable of greatly decreasing the amount of labor involved in a project involve the level, for certain. Many times a level is capable of being substituted for a rule, a tape or a square. For example, if you know that your workbench surface is properly level, then you can check the squareness for an entire assembly just by placing it on the workbench correctly. A level will show if each of the parts is actually properly square in relation to the base that is being used and the levelness of your bench.

The level is also capable of being used in a similar way for laying out a new structure. The starting structure may either be a floor or a ceiling which has already been found to be level. With some shims and some basic imagination, you can lay out some even angles relatively quickly.

Levels are made out of all kinds of materials including aluminum, wood or magnesium. Wooden levels tend not to be capable of scratching surfaces that are polished. If the weight of the level is important, then you should know that magnesium levels tend to be quite light in nature. The aluminum level is still the most popular choice for most leveling needs. Levels are available in a wide variety of different lengths ranging from 2' to 4' depending on what your needs are.

Levels are both rugged and waterproof and weather proof, but there are still some cautions that you need to keep in mind when it comes to using them properly. First and foremost, you need to keep all oils as well as solvents away from your levels if they have plastic lenses as well as moisture seals. Avoid any vibration from power saws because the sound is capable of breaking the vials if it resonates within them. Additionally, you should store your levels in a place where they are not going to bend or twist in any way. There are ways to come by replacement vials if your vials do break, but you may prefer to simply buy a new level.

Chalk Lines - The best tool that you can use for laying out a long and accurate line is the chalk line. This tool involves stretching the line very tight, then lifting vertically and snapping the line against the surface to create a perfect chalk line. Chalk lines are used for many large scale purposes since they are longer than the average level, square or even measuring tape in certain circumstances. Chalk lines come in lengths between 50 feet and 100 feet, though they are available shorter and longer as needed. Additional chalk can be purchased and replacement lines can also be purchased as needed. Fresh chalk should be kept dry to keep it from clumping. The chalk box should also be kept dry for this purpose.
