Dividers - The divider is designed in order to draw circles or arcs on a designated work piece. The divider is typically made out of steel and it has sharp points that are capable of marking metal or wood. Dividers are also commonly used in order to transfer distances between a sample piece and a working piece through direct marking. A line parallel to an edge can also be marked if the divider is moved down along the line.
Sometimes a sheet needs to be able to fit an irregular edge, and a divider can be used to match the edge because it follows every single bump. Dividers are generally available with spans up to 7 inches or 18 cm. This means that a circle that is up to twice this amount is capable of being drawn. Trammel points are two steel points on a single wooden beam, and they are also capable of being used for the purpose of larger circles. Sometimes the points on the divider can become dull. They are capable of being sharpened, however, if you have a grinding wheel. Keep in mind that the divider is going to work best if both of the legs are the same length as one another. If the divider has a removable leg then this is not going to be a problem. If you are dealing with a fixed divider on the other hand, then it is going to take some control on your part in order to control the length and the sharpness at the same time.
If the divider has inside edges that are flat, then you may want to only grind the outside when sharpening the points on the tool. This is purely for looks of course, since the divider does not have any scale and therefore will be set using the point contact.
Awl and Center Punch - These two tools, the center punch and the awl, are used for the purpose of marking. The major difference between these two tools is that the awl is not actually designed to be used with a mallet or a hammer, but the center punch is. Palm pressure is generally all that it takes for an awl to serve its purpose where as a center punch cannot accomplish what it is meant to without the help of a hammer or a mallet.
The awl is designated for use with forming starter holes for the purpose of nails or wood screws. It is especially helpful when it comes to leather work as well as upholstery. The awl is also used for the purpose of scribing lines or creating patterns on metal, wood or plastic. Very little maintenance is required in order to keep an awl in good condition.
