The most common types of planes are hand planes. These planes are made up of a body that has a sharp metal blade on one end. When you move the plane over a piece of wood, the blade sheers off a thin strip of the wood. By doing this over and over, you can use planers to reduce the thickness, length, or width of any wooden object. Because planers aren’t electric or high powered, you can use them to resize already finished items. One example of this would be using planers to shorten finished glass doors on a cabinet that were made just a little too big. If you used a more powerful tool on doors that already had glass in them, you would run the risk of damaging or breaking the glass.
