Winches are mechanical devices that are used in conjunction with a rope or a wire rope, with its primary purpose being either to pull in or wind up the rope, or to let out or wind out the rope. The winch in its simplest form is designed to adjust the tension of a wire rope on a spool with a hand crank that is attacked. Winches are also available in a number of larger and more specialized forms with a diverse number of applications including for tow trucks, elevators and steam shovels. In some winches, the spool that holds the rope or wire rope is referred to as the winch drum.

Most boats and ships have at least several winches, as they are a powerful and effective way to pull sheets, halyards and anchor or mooring lines.

Some of the characteristics that are unique from one winch to the next are the brake style, the method of power and the tensile strength or strength capability of the wire rope. Choosing the right winch assembly is an important part in ensuring that it does what is intended.
