There are two general types of squares, but both do the same thing. First, there are triangle squares, also called carpenter’s squares. While the name may sound strange, these squares are actually very useful. The two outside legs of the triangle form a perfect 90 degree angle. The angled hypotenuse, or the leg opposite the 90 degree angle, of these types of squares is marked with measurements that allow you to make cuts at various angles. The other type of squares is shaped like L’s. These squares are usually referred to as combination squares. Sometimes, combination squares will have a level attached to them, making them more useful than a standard metal square.

 

Both types of squares have their uses, and because of this, most people who use squares on a regular basis own both types of them. In fact, since both carpenter squares and combination squares come in a variety of sizes, sometimes people have two or three of each type of square. It all depends on what kind of projects you’re working on.
