Finishing a woodworking or metalworking job relies on tools such as sanders & accessories. The basic job of a sander is to utilize grains of a hard material, traditionally sand, to cut lots of tiny pieces from your work. The smaller or finer the grit, the smaller the cut and the smoother the finish will be. There are a variety of types of sandpapers, depending on the task and material. The most common material is aluminium oxide sanders, which is useful for both wood and metal.

There are more specialized materials for sanders and accessories. Garnet sanding material is very useful for wood sanding. Silicon oxide sanders are available from the very course to the very fine, and is useful for wet sanding. Chromium oxide is used to produce a very fine grit sander. Finally there is alumina-zirconia which is used for machine grinding and sanding operations. In addition to the types of grit, the backing is also varied for purpose. Paper and fiber backed sandpapers are cheap to produce, but are not as durable and typically need replacement. Mylar backed films, used for finer grits, are useful for reusable, cleanable sander film at an increased cost. Cloth backed sander films are used for power sanders & accessories.

Other variations in sanders are in sandpaper shapes, adhesive used to bond the grit to the backing, and whether it is for wet or dry application. There are many kinds of sanders, but there is one designed in purpose for your project.
