Orbital sanders are actually random orbital sanders, a type of handheld power sander where the sanding action is actually a completely random orbit. Random orbital sanders produce their random orbit by spinning the sanding disk while simultaneously moving it in an elliptical motion, meaning that no single part of the abrasive disk is going to travel the same exact path more than once. Because the sanding action is unique and random, random orbital sanders do not leave any kind of swirl marks or sanding patterns in the wood, and they are not sensitive to whatever wood grain is present. What this means is that two pieces of wood meeting at right angles can be sanded without issue, among other applications.
Modern random orbital sanders come with disks that attach via pressure sensitive adhesive backings and hook and loop systems. Most models have dust collection features built in, with a vacuum that sucks the sanding dust in through the pad where it is then fed into a canister or bag for easy clean up. Because random orbital sanders are becoming so popular for many wood working purposes, their designs are constantly being refined to produce better, more efficient products.
