The type of grit are varied, including garnet, useful for wood, aluminium oxide, useful for both woods and metals, silicon oxide for wet applications, and alumina-zirconia, useful for metal grinding applications. The backing of the belt is either made of cloth, paper, fiber or Mylar. The backing type determines the durability, life and cost of the belt.
