Traditional jigsaws are hand held devices that have a handle and a small blade attached. The jigsaw has a place in the toolbox of most carpenters as these are excellent saws for cutting a number of different materials including manmade materials, metals and plastics. There is a different type of jigsaw blade for each type of material. Jigsaws are useful in many construction and carpentry applications, including for the cutting of drywall in the home.

 

There are also a number of different types of scroll saws, with the most popular type being the parallel arm scroll saw. This particular design has a motor attached near the back of the saw's arms, and the arms are always parallel to one another. The C-arm style of scroll saws has a blade mountain between the C's ends. Finally the rigid arm scroll saws are no longer made but were once quite popular, and had a single piece frame constructed from cast iron with a pitman arm holding the blade. Today's scroll saws are all designed to be constant tension in nature, which creates a stronger saw with more power and better capability.
