First, programmable thermostats often let you set the heating and air conditioning to not only come on when the temperature in the room reaches a specific point but to also come on at certain times of the day or on certain days. For example, you can program the thermostat to come on at 6:00 am to warm up (or cool down) the house before you wake up for work. If you’re installing your programmable thermostat in your office at work, you could program it to keep the temperature higher or lower on weekends when you’re not there, or you could even set it to not run on the weekends at all.

 

Programmable thermostats include other functions as well. Most display the time and current date and day as well as the temperature, which can be useful. Many also automatically adjust for daylight savings time. In addition to the programmed settings, you can manually override the temperature on most programmable thermostats, so you can set it a little higher or lower if necessary.
