ABS - This is a type of plastic type that is black, and is commonly used for running waste water lines.

Actual Dimension - This term describes the exact measure of a piece of lumber after it has been cut and dried and then milled.

Aerator - This is the diverter or the screen unit that you screw onto the end of a water faucet to restrict the flow of water and to control or prevent splashing.

Adaptor - This is a fitting that is designed to connect two different pipes when they are sized differently.

Air Chamber - This is a vertical pipe that is filled with air and designed to prevent water hammer by way of absorbing any pressure when the water is shut off at the faucet or the valve.

Aggregate - This is a type of crushed rock that is used to serve as a top layer in many flat roofing applications.

Algae - These are micro organisms that can grow in damp colonies, creating colonies. Algae can appear on certain types of rooftops and algae can go on to cause discoloration in the shingles. Algae is often described as being a fungus.

Allowable Span - This is described as being the distance between two different supporting points, and it is used for load bearing forms of lumber such as girders, rafters and joists.

Allowances - This is a sum of money that is set aside in a contract for construction for any items that have not already been specified or selected in the contract. Allowances are best kept pared down to a minimum and they are used for items that are not going to impact the construction's earliest stages.

Ampacity - This refers to the amount of current that a wire is capable of carrying safely. For example, 12g electrical copper wires are capable of safely carrying as many as 20 amps.

Amperage - Also known as AMPS, this is a unit used for electrical current or for volume. Amperage is typically based on how many electrons are passing a certain point with every second. See Voltage for more information.

Anchor Bolts - These are L shaped bolts that are set into a concrete foundation so that the house's framing can be attached to the foundation. Anchor bolts may also be attached to a source that is secured so that something less secured can be attached.

Angle Iron - This is structural steel that is bent in a 90 degree angle and used for the purpose of either fastening or reinforcing joints for the frame of construction.

APA Plywood - This is plywood that has been rated by the APA, the American Plywood Association.

Architect - This is someone that is licensed by the state to deal in architecture.
