How to Build Antler Chandeliers

Making a deer antler chandelier is not a difficult task. Most people assume that furniture constructed from deer antlers is unethical, because they assume that the antler has to be forcefully removed from the dear. The truth is, with the exception of one species of deer, all male deer grow and shed their antlers every single year, meaning that the deer antlers you need to build an antler chandelier can be harvested without harming the deer.

Every year following mating season, male deer from most species will shed their antlers. This is done usually by striking their antlers against tree trunks to knock them loose. The antlers are hollow inside and therefore when they become more fragile following mating season, they can be easily removed. Because they are hollow, it can become easy and advantageous to use these natural bone-like appendages to create unique chandeliers.

There are many different ways to build a deer antler chandelier. The first thing that you need to do is to get the wiring in order. How many lighting fixtures do you want to include in your deer antler chandelier? This will determine how many different antlers you need to include in the overall design. Because the antlers are hollow on the inside, you can easily run wiring through them, and can turn the tips of each branch of the antlers into the lighting fixtures for a really unique look.

Once you know how many lighting fixtures you want, obtain the necessary wiring. Some people simply take apart other chandeliers or lamps to get the wiring and the lighting fixtures that they need. Once you have the necessary elements, you can begin to construct your deer antlers to build the right design, wiring it together as you go. The wiring process is relatively simple with the hollow antlers, as you generally only have to feed the wiring through the natural antler material. The antlers are hard enough that they are protective of the wiring, and they can withstand the heat from the lighting elements as well.

Putting it all together is a process that can be unique based on your tastes. Some people use natural elements like twine or rope to connect the various antlers and other elements. Others use fine drill bits and screws to attach everything in a sturdy way. Put your antlers together in the way that you most prefer, and finish up the wiring process to get your lighting fixture put together. Then all you have to do is come up with a viable way to hang your deer antler chandelier from the ceiling. Most people use chain, which can be affixed to your deer antler chandelier with screws, rope, twine or other materials depending on your tastes. Once you finish the wiring and create a way to hang your deer antler chandelier from the ceiling all that is left is to turn it on and see if it works!

Deer antlers are not hollow. They are solid bone and have to be drilled to insert wiring. Most (all) drill bits are straight and most antlers are curved so some creativeness is needed to drill the openings for the wiring.
