There are many different ways that a table can get damaged, and when it is something so little it can be frustrating to have to replace because you don’t know how to fix it. Since most damage that occurs to a table is minimal, whether over time or a quick accident, you can actually fix the table up to look as good as new. A few of the simplest repairs you can make are adjusting table legs, removing scratches, and evening out the surface when it starts to sink.
When you are adjusting table legs, the most important thing you need to do before getting started is determining whether or not you actually need to make table repairs. Some homes have floors that are slanted or have a depression in the floor that is causing the table to wobble. Try moving the table to different location and see if it is still wobbling. If it is, you need to figure out which leg is the culprit. A general rule is that it will always be just one leg that is making the table wobble.
You’ll need to get a level to see which side is different. The way that the table is wobbling won’t always be a way to tell which leg is causing the problem because one leg could be shorter than the other or one leg could be longer, and both could cause the same wobble. The type of table you have will decide if this will be an easy job or not. If your table has adjustable legs, then you may just be able to tighten some of the bolts as needed. However, if the table is secure without any adjustable parts, you’ll need to actual table repairs.
For a leg that is longer than the other, you want to carefully sand it down until it is the same length as the rest of the legs. Don’t use any type of saw to cut the wood and don’t use a sander for too long because you are likely to take too much wood off. If you are dealing with a leg that is too short, measure out a piece of material that you are comfortable with to attach to the bottom of the leg. People who are really handy can add another decoration to the bottom of the chair to make it blend in.
Removing scratches is definitely one of the easiest table repairs for wooden tables. Simply sand the table down until you don’t see the scratches anymore. Then dust the table off and use a polish to finish off the process. The polish you want to use will depend on the color of the table and the type of wood it is made off.
If the middle of your table is sagging, your table repairs will basically be adding new parts to the table. You can install new supports under the table where it is sinking so that the surface area is flat again. Most hardware stores will not only sell the materials you need but will also have advice for specific types of supports that you can use on your table.
