If your medicine cabinet has seen better days, or you would like to add one where there is only a mirror, there are a few options available to you. It is easy to find prebuilt medicine cabinets at any home improvement store, so this article will focus on installing these. If you are building your own medicine cabinet, these tips will still help you get it installed the right way once construction is complete.
1. Replacing an old medicine cabinet.
This will requite a little measuring on your part before you buy the replacement. If the old cabinet was installed flush on the wall, you will have a little more wiggle room when it comes to the size of your new cabinet. However, is important to err on the side of caution and get one that is only a little bit deeper, otherwise you may end up bumping your head on the new cabinet.
If the old cabinet was installed in a recess you have two main options. You can either get a new cabinet with the same dimensions, or you can consider carving out a larger space for a bigger cabinet. For those that don’t have a lot of experience in wall modifications, we highly recommend going with the same size cabinet as you had before. You’ll save time and money and you won’t have to get professional help.
2. Installing a new cabinet.
You have a lot more freedom for placement and size if the wall has never had a cabinet before. The main consideration is going to be whether you will be replacing the mirror in your bathroom (if you have one) over the sink, or whether you can simply hang the medicine cabinet on the side wall. Think about ease of use when you’re considering where to hang the cabinet as well as how much it will take to remove a mirror if necessary.
Again, you’ll need to decide whether or not you want your medicine cabinet to be recessed. It is a lot easier to simply hang a new one up without worrying about carving into the wall, but these units do look nice. Weigh the amount of experience you have, as well as the overall cost of the job to see if it is worth it to make major modifications to your wall.
When you’re ready to hang your new medicine cabinet, it helps to have a friend with you. They can hold the cabinet up for you while you attach it and it is a lot safer. We recommend taking the door off of the cabinet before hanging the unit for two main reasons. First, the unit will be lighter with the door off, and second, you run less of a chance of breaking the front, especially if it is mirrored.
Remember to use a level and to properly secure the cabinet to the wall to avoid having it fall once it is installed. Overall, with the right tools and help, hanging a medicine cabinet should only take a few minutes of your time.
