Kitchen Tile Ideas
September 16th, 2009 | Aesthetics, Handy Man, Kitchen, Tile
When you're ready to design your kitchen, you have many different kitchen tile ideas to choose from. We all our want our kitchens to be a beautiful and stylish place to gather, prepare food and eat. But despite all the snappy kitchen tile ideas found in home improvement books, it's important to consider the practical aspects of certain types of tile.
You need to think about how you use your kitchen before settling on a kitchen tile. A large family with a kitchen that's busy almost every hour of the day presents a very different need than a small kitchen that's used only occasionally. A more formal kitchen will require a different look than a country kitchen. You can get great kitchen tile ideas from home and decorating magazines, but don't forget to consider how well the tile will wear, and how easy it is to clean.
Ceramic and Porcelain
Ceramic and porcelain aren't among the most ground-breaking kitchen tile ideas, but they are practical, reliable favorites. They're durable and less expensive than many other choices. They're available in a huge variety of styles, colors and designs. You can even purchase ceramic tile that looks like stone, to give your kitchen a high-end look without the maintenance or the price tag. These tiles are also some of the easiest to clean. They're non-porous, so they're stain resistant. It's hard to go wrong with ceramic or porcelain kitchen tiles.
Stone
Natural stone is featured in many modern kitchen tile ideas. It's a beautiful and luxurious option for your kitchen floor, with some less expensive options like slate, and high-end options like marble or granite. This floor will cost much more than a certain tile floor, but if you want the warm look of stone it's definitely an option.
There's no cushion with a stone floor, and the stone does get cold. Stone is porous, so it needs to be sealed. Even then it can stain, so this type of floor requires a bit more maintenance than ceramic or porcelain.
Vinyl
Vinyl kitchen tile ideas are more exciting than ever because of the wide variety of styles and colors of vinyl tile that are available today. Though the choice is vast, the price tag is small. You can go very inexpensive with vinyl tile or purchase higher-end options. Vinyl tile can look like wood or stone, and be barely patterned or eye-popping. It's also among the easiest tile to install yourself. Vinyl is a great choice for a busy kitchen and for families with kids. Vinyl tile can scratch, but with a little caution and regular ordinary cleaning like sweeping and mopping, the tile can last a very long time.
You can choose the tile that's best for your lifestyle and budget and still get creative with your kitchen tile ideas. Alternating color tiles are popular, especially black and white, or you can create a mosaic pattern with different colors and textures, a repeating pattern or even a border around the perimeter of the room. Use your imagination and enjoy your new tile floor.
