Ply - This term describes a single layer of veneer.
Pressure Treating - This term describes impregnating pieces of lumber with chemicals like fire retardants and preservatives through the forcing of the chemicals with high pressure into the wood's very structure.
Reman - This is a shortened term referring to remanufacturing or remanufacture, which is a process that involves converting common products into more specialized products by further manufacturing them.
Ruff Sawn - This is a designation applied to plywood siding or paneling where the wood has been textured with the saw in order to provide for a rough sawn and decorative appearance.
Sanded - This term describes plywood panels processed through a sander in order to obtain a smoother surface.
Select - This is a high quality lumber piece that has been graded for its appearance. It is generally used for exterior trim, interior trim and cabinetry.
Softwood - This general term is used to refer to a variety of trees with narrow, scale-like or needle-like leaves. These are general coniferous trees. The term does not actually relate to the actual hardness for the wood, only the tree that it comes from.
Standard and Better - This term describes lumber that contains a mixture of different grades, where the lowest grade is the light framing Standard grade, and the "and better" portion signifies that some of the lumber is of a higher grade. This type of lumber is generally best suited for general purposes.
Stud Grade - Lumber of this grade has the strength and stiffness values that make it suitable for use in load bearing walls.
T1-11 - This is a type of siding made from plywood that is grooved so that it resembles lumber.
Tally - This is a numerical breakdown on lengths of sizes of lumber in a single load.
Utility - This is a type of grade for softwood lumber that is used specifically when a combination of economy and strength is desired for the project. It is generally suited for a number of uses in construction but it may not necessarily be used when a high amount of strength is required.
Veneer - This is wood that is sliced, sawn or peeled in a constant thickness and then used to produce plywood. Plywood is the result when two raw materials are glued and veneered together.
Vertical Grain - Also known as VG, this describes lumber that is sawn at right angles to the growth rings so that they form 45 degree angles within the surface of the piece.
Wane - The bark or lack thereof caused by any damage on the edge corner of a piece of the lumber.
Warp - Any sort of variation in a plank or piece of wood that makes it not flat.
