When most people talk about a snow pusher, they're talking about what's essentially a front loader with a snow pushing attachment. This is a small vehicle that's driven with the operator in a cab with the snow pusher attachment on the front. Some types of snow shovels are also called snow pushers but these are hand-held and much more labor-intensive, as well as designed for a smaller area.
A hand-held snow pusher is something you would want to use for your sidewalk or a small driveway. This is just a straight blade with side edges that's on the end of a handle. You push it like you would push a push broom and it pushes the snow out of the way. The way the blade on the bottom is designed makes it easy to push the snow straight ahead rather than have to lift it to shovel it.
You wouldn't want to use a handheld snow pusher to clear a large driveway or a parking lot, which is one of the most common uses for front loader snow pushers. These pieces of equipment are also often called box or containment plows. Some people use what's known as a windrow plow to move snow. This type of plow has an attachment in front but sits at an angle and pushes the snow off in a funneling motion to one side.
A snow pusher attachment has a straight up-and-down construction. The line of the attachment is at a right angle to the ground and there are walls on each side to hold the snow in. It simply pushes straight ahead, moving the snow directly in front of it rather than funneling it to the side. This keeps snow from piling up on the sides as it does with a large snow plow on the street. Instead of just scraping it out of the way and forming a large wall of snow on the edge, a snow pusher allows snow to be moved long distances.
If you've ever been in a parking lot after large snow and seen all of the snow piled in a few places around a lot, you've seen the work of the snow pusher. Had they used an angle plow, there would be rows of snow. But with the snow pusher of the snow can be taken to one area and removed completely from other areas.
Snow pushers first appeared in the 1970s and were then only used by professionals for things like parking lots. Now snow pusher attachments can be purchased for things like lawn and garden tractors and small front loaders.
Snow pushers can be designed in different ways such as having different heights and widths. Obviously, larger plows can move snow even more quickly. Some have a steel edge on the bottom that allows them to actually scrape pavement and remove almost every bit of snow. Others have a rubber edge and are better than a steel blade for areas that aren't flat and smooth.
