Painting 101
November 12th, 2009 | Handy Man, House Paint
Here are some things that you want to know in order to improve your capability for painting. Keep reading if you are planning a painting project and want to improve your chances of doing it successfully.
Begin by taking off every switch and wall outlet cover. Tape the screw to the plates to keep them from being lost. Make any wall repairs you might find before you paint. For larger holes and gaps use fiberglass tape. Spackle should be sufficient for the smaller stuff. After the spackling and sanding is done, a damp sponge may be used to remove dust from the wall surface.
Staying organized will also go a long way. Gather all of your tools together, and create a tool area in the center of the room for easy access from all points.
You need to realize that there is no reason why you should have to get it all done in a single day. You can prep the space that you are painting a day ahead of time, for example. You can move all of the furniture into the middle of the room, you can remove everything from all of the walls, you can patch any cracks and holes, you can remove outlet covers and switch covers, and you can lay down painters tape around the windows, the doors, the molding and the lighting fixtures and so on. All of this can be done a day in advance so that it does not have to be done in a rush on the day that you intend to get the painting done.
You should make sure that you are wearing comfortable clothing that is old, because you are more than likely going to get paint on yourself. You are also going to want to make sure that you take off all of your jewelry, and that you wear shoes that are easily to slip on and off while painting. When you are painting the room's ceiling, you are going to want to use a shower cap in order to cover your hair, or a baseball cap or a scarf. You are also going to want to protect your eyes so that dripping paint doesn't get you.
Punching holes in the paint can's interior rim will keep the paint from building up on the sides, which will prevent it from spilling over. When it comes time to cut in, make sure that you play things safe by taping off the area that you would like to protect. This is going to make it easier for you to achieve a much nicer and cleaner line of paint. When it comes time for you to work on the center of each of the walls, a paint roller is absolutely the way for you to go. The best way to get a consistent paint job in the middle of a wall is using a W motion.
