Removing Mold
September 10th, 2011 | Clean, Mold, Remove
If you begin to notice black stains, white stains and green stains on your walls, or your floor or any other surface, especially if there is a musty odor in play, then you could have the tell tale signs that there is mold in your home. There are a number of varieties of mold that are simply harmless but there are also some varieties of mold that are capable of causing harm in addition to being unattractive in your home and bad for the quality of the air that you breathe. Certain types of toxic molds are actually capable of causing serious illness and death if they are not removed quickly. The best defense in such a situation is simply to remove any and all mold from the home as soon as it appears, taking steps to make sure that the mold is not allowed to appear again.
Care must be taken when it comes to removing mold from the home because the cleaning products used for this purpose are often caustic. It is also important to make sure that mold particles are not released into the air so that we can prevent ourselves from breathing them in. Here are some tips for cleaning mold and mildew in the home:
- You need to make sure that you are wearing the proper safety gear and protective gear, including safety goggles, plastic gloves and a nose mask or face mask because these things will keep you safe from mold spores and mold particles.
- You should be using detergent and hot water for mild stains, but other stains may require that you use a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part bleach. The chlorine in the bleach can be really harmful to your lungs, so make sure that you are using it only in areas that are well ventilated.
- You should never, ever mix chlorine bleach with any other type of cleaners or chemicals because you can accidently create toxic fumes which are severely harmful to your health.
- Any rags or towels that you use for scrubbing the mold and the mildew should be thrown away in a sealed plastic bag when you are finished with the task. The bag should be sealed completely and taken outside immediately. No rags used for mold or mildew should be reused for any purpose at all whatsoever.
Mold and mildew both like to thrive in areas of moisture, which is why we find these things in the bathroom, the basement and the kitchen. Any things that absorb moisture such as carpets, clothes and towels can cause trouble in damp areas, so make sure that these items are discarded if mold should happen to become a problem for you.
