Review: Back to Basics – A Complete Guide to Traditional Skills by Abigail R. Gehring

This book, Back to Basics, covers all of the basic living skills that have been employed by our forefathers before us. The full color tome provides a modern window into basic living skills, providing readers with a form of escape into a time before power tools and modern day conveniences. Back to Basics provides it readers a manual for a healthy and green way of self sufficient living. The tome is in its third edition, which brings with it hundreds of projects for you to complete. Each project is thoroughly illustrated with photos, step by step sequences, tables and charts, and a full and informative text so that it is easy to start a project. The projects that are listed include making such yummy goods such as blueberry peach jam and cheddar cheese, building projects such as crafting a table with hand tools, gardening techniques such as tree grafts and many other techniques. This book will provide ways to have old fashioned fun and get into crafting, with projects like rug weaving and making homemade toys. The book contains 2000 color photos and 200 black and white illustrations.

Those who are looking for a less complicated way of life, one which is more cost effective and self sufficient, are described under the catch all phrase “voluntary simplicity.” Back to basics provides its readers a look into this world, presenting the skills and techniques for handling home projects, gaining control over ones personal budgets, and providing the instructions for making things by hand. The projects include such tasks as preserving one's own food, making lumber from trees and then making a home from the lumber. There are projects on making crafting items and recreational items for family fun with little money.

Unlike other books on cheap and cost effective ways to complete projects, the projects in the book are based upon the very techniques that people have survived upon for numerous years. Given the economic climate, such simple living techniques and ways to have fun are a refreshing change of pace. There are plenty of projects that allow you to save money by preserving your food, enjoying fruits and vegetables even past their season. You can build your own furniture, grow your own vegetables, make your own fun, all for less money.

The book contains over 50 different subject areas, so you will find a project to suit your needs or taste. You can pick your projects, or read the book cover to cover. Each page will inspire fresh ideas for all of your projects. Back to Basics is a tome that takes you back to your roots with inspiring do it yourself projects.
