Safety for Power Tools

Avoiding Accidents
Whenever you are using a power tool, you need to make your main concern safety above all else. You should be paying attention to the following power tool safety rules because they may just safe your life, or your fingers, some day.
Make sure that you read, completely understand and completely follow all of the directions in the owner's manual. Use a tool only for the purpose that it was actually designed for and nothing more. Do not force a tool or do anything that could cause its motor to overheat or to burn out or you could be asking for trouble.
Analyze your working environment. For example, you should never operate a power tool in an atmosphere that is damp, wet or filled with fumes. You need to make sure that your workspace is always kept well lit, free of clutter and well ventilated at all times.
Make sure that you are dressing for safety. You should not be wearing loose clothing or any jewelry at all. If you have long hair, make sure that you tie it back prior to operating any power tools. Make sure that you are always wearing the safety gear that is appropriate for the task at hand.
Think before you take action. Know what the consequences are for every move that you make before you make it, or before you encounter those consequences. This is going to slow you down when you first get started, but once you know what is safe and what is not, it will become like second nature for you.
Concentrate on the job or the task at hand. Do not talk to people while you are working, do not answer the phone, do not let yourself become distracted. Never allow children or pets to come near your workspace. Make sure that you are always focusing on what you are doing at the present moment rather than worrying about the next step in whatever project you are working on.
Practice patience and take your time. Hurrying yourself and taking shortcuts that are not necessary is only going to put you in serious risk because these are common causes for major workshop accidents.
Make sure that you are maintaining your balance. Make sure that you are wearing footwear that is non slip, and make sure that your footing is always completely secure. Make sure that you grip portable tools firmly to keep them in your grasp so that they do not clatter to the floor, especially while operating. Do not ever reach out too far with a tool, and absolutely never operate a power tool held above your head. Make sure that you are at the level of the work piece rather than below it.
