Having the right screwdriver on you can make most screwing jobs a lot simpler. A basic set of screwdrivers should include four standard slot tip screw drivers and four standard cross tip or Phillips screwdrivers, each with a different shaft length and a different blade size. Larger sets may contain a number of other types of screw drivers as well including star-shaped Torx screwdrivers, which are especially handy when it comes to repairing a number of different household appliances, yard and garden equipment and cars.

There are also square-drive screwdrivers or Robertson screwdrivers, which can be purchased and added to your set of screwdrivers in order to help you deal with the recessed screws that are commonly found on boats, recreational vehicles and in furniture. If you plan on working with many different types of screw tips and screw sizes, then you may want to just consider buying a bunch of different screwdriver tips that are capable of fitting on a single handle.

Buyer's Guide

You should only ever buy the best screwdrivers, and never simply the cheapest set. The best tools to buy are the ones that possess handles that are made out of a strong plastic material such as butyrate, and that have strong steel handles that are ridged or rough finished in order to resist the chance of slippage. Cheap screwdrivers are much more likely to be made of soft steel, sometimes softer than many of the fasteners that you will be using. You should also aim to choose screwdrivers that feel comfortable in your hand. One with deep ridges or a triangular handle may be the easiest to grip and to turn. As you sop around, keep in mind that larger handles can create a larger amount of torque or turning toward when bearing down on the screw.

Power Drivers

The proliferation of screwdrivers that run on power has coincided with the widespread use of hardened drywall purpose screws in place of just wood screws. The drywall screw has a Phillips head that is deeply cut and therefore ideal for use with power driving. The most basic power driving screwdriver is the pocket-sized cordless variety which is slow but extremely convenient when driving small screws. Drill drivers are essentially cordless drills that have variable speed triggers, allowing you to adjust the torque of the drill or low speed settings for the purpose of screwing in screws.

Choosing the right screwdriver for your unique needs is essential if you want to get the most out of what this tool has to offer. The screwdriver appears to be a simple and versatile tool to use, but if you use it improperly, you can suffer as a result. Make sure that you have enough different types of screw drivers that you can have your unique needs met no matter what type of project you are working on.
