Reusing and Adapting Screws
Renew a Screw - When you remove and reseat a Phillips head or slotted screw, the result is often a slot that has become damaged, especially when the screwdriver blade did not fit into the slot properly in the first place. If you do not have a replacement screw available, then it is possible for you to restore the old screw. The way that you can do this is by running a hacksaw along the slot or slots of the old screw in order to deepen them. If you are a repairing a screw out of its hole, then do not try holding the screw in your fingers. Instead, put it in a vice between two scraps of wood so that you can protect the threads of the screw while protecting your fingers.
Converting a Phillips Head Screw - If you should need to seat or to remove a Phillips head screw, and the only screwdriver that you have on hand is a slotted screwdriver, then you can use a hacksaw in order to extend one of the screw's slots in the head of the screw so that it goes all the way across the screw. Once again, make sure that the screw is out of its hole, holding it in a vice rather than simply in your fingertips.
Unclogging It - In order to remove a screw when the head of the screw has been clogged by paint, first use a scratch awl so that you can remove the paint from the screw's slot.
Keeping Track of Screws - When you are disassembling something that requires repair or to be moved, what you can do is thread the screws into the edge of a piece of cardboard that is corrugated. Then you can take this strip and tape it to one of the larger pieces of the furniture so that one of the pieces are lost in the process. In order to make the reassembly process even easier, what you can do is write notes about how the screws should be positioned on that strip of cardboard.
Golf Tee Trick - In order to restore a screw that has become worn or stripped, you can plug the hole using several toothpicks covered in glue, a piece of a towel or even a golf tee made from wood. Fill up the screw hole with some glue and then insert in the plug that you have chosen. Once the glue has set, you can cut off whatever excess plug is left and then drill the pilot hole right in the plug so you can drive in the screw.
Hot Metal - If you cannot get a screw out when it is stuck in a metal object, lubricate the screw and then heat it using either a propane torch or a soldering iron. The soldering wire will work especially well on thinner metal like home appliances.
