Selecting the Right Glue pt 1
May 1st, 2011 | Handy Man, Tools
Ever since the first type of glue was ever patented, back in the 1700s, glue is a product that has been used for a variety of different purposes and on a wide variety of different products. There is a wide variety of different glue products that exist on the market today. Knowing what type of glue you need to use for a specific task is going to be absolutely essential in helping you to get the job done properly. In fact, if you use the correct glue for the project at hand, this can help you avoid ever having to repeat that same gluing task ever again.
Every type of glue does come with its own unique instructions as well as a set of cautionary statements and an ingredient list, and most glues also come with a list of the products that the glue is going to work best for. We are going to look at some of the various types of glues that are available out there and the common uses for each of those different types of glues. Here are some of the glues that work best for certain tasks and their drying times and setting times and any important application procedures as well. Still, you should prepare to look at the label for the glue product that you choose to make sure that you are choosing the proper glue for the intended application process and purpose.
General Indoor Uses
Most indoor-purpose types of glues are going to work well with any products made from wood, ceramics and paper. These types of glue are usually made with polyvinyl acetate, and they generally cure within 24 hours but set within 8 hours. If you want to use this type of glue, then what you are going to want to do is to apply a thin coating of the glue to both of the surfaces and then apply a clamp or apply pressure to the items for a period of 4 hours in order to maintain their proper alignment while they are setting. This is a type of glue that cleans easily using water and soap, because polyvinyl acetate glues are water soluble.
Light Repairing Tasks
Occasionally we need to repair decorative items like ceramics, glassware or plastics, and they require a minimal amount of bonding. Glue that is comprised of cellulose is particularly helpful for tasks like these. They set to more than half of their strength within 2 hours, and are nearly at full strength after 2 days. You should apply two coats worth of the adhesive to each of the surface, providing the extra strength that you need for such a repair task. On the downside with this type of glue, the glue happens to be resistant to water and this means that acetone is going to be required for any cleaning up purposes.
