Simple Ways to Unclog a Drain

draincloggedWhen a drain gets clogged, it can be frustrating to have to deal with. You don’t want to call a plumber because that can get expensive, and sometimes the problem seems like it should be simple enough for you to deal with. You can unclog the drain yourself with a number of different methods that are easy to do and won’t cost you a lot of money. The type of clog that you have might determine which kind of cleaners you should use in your drain.

There are lots of “home remedies” you can use to unclog a drain and they are made with products you probably already have sitting around your home. The simplest solution is to pour baking soda down the drain that is clogged, followed by vinegar. The chemical reaction between these two ingredients actually cleans thoroughly and breaks through build up found in the pipes. Let the solution sit for a few hours before rinsing it down so it has time to take full effect and it will completely unclog a drain. This method works for many different types of clogs, including some hair build up and chemical deposits.

When you want to unclog a drain that has been backed up by grease, you can use a similar mixture to safely remove the grease from the drain. Combine a half cup of salt with a half cup of baking soda in the clogged drain. Immediately pour boiling water down the drain. It needs to be enough to moisten the whole mixture and loosen the grease. Let it sit overnight and then rinse it all down in the morning.

You can also use baking soda mixtures to prevent the need to unclog a drain by cleaning your drain regularly. These baking soda mixtures are completely safe for pipes, as well as garbage disposals, and won’t cause corrosion. Combine a half cup of baking soda with a half cup of salt and a quarter cup of cream of tartar. Make this mixture in a jar or glass cup and then pour it into the drains you want to clean. Follow that up ten seconds later with really hot water, preferably from a tea kettle but hot tap water will also work. You only need about a quarter cup per drain, so if you use a jar you can store your leftover homemade cleaner. By doing this once a week your drains will stay clean.

These baking soda solutions are a great way to unclog a drain, as well as remove as foul odors, but sometimes they won’t work. When a drain is badly clogged and won’t budge even after you have tried your home remedy a few different times, you might need to buy drain cleaners. Some drain cleaners can only be used in certain places such as sinks or toilets, so be sure that you are buying the right one for the drain that needs fixing. However, baking soda solutions are really powerful cleaners so if they didn’t work, you might need to hire a plumber instead.
