Steps to Installing a Home Steam Shower
September 24th, 2009 | Bathroom, Handy Man, Install, Shower
A home steam shower makes your bathroom a retreat, and if you're a do-it-yourselfer with some experience you can probably handle at least some of the installation yourself. Not only will it make time spent in the bathroom more enjoyable, but any type of bathroom remodeling improves the value of your home. Buy installing a steam shower you're raising the value and doing something nice for yourself at the same time.
Since you're already going to invest in a home steam shower, purchase the best one you can afford that has the features you want. There are dozens of variations when you consider all the different available features and their combinations. At the very least, you'll want both an overhead shower head and a handheld showerhead. You can choose almost as many jets as you want. Obviously, the more jets you use, the more thorough the steam shower will be. Couple it with a whirlpool bathtub, and you may never want to go to the spa again.
Leveling the home steam shower is an important first step. If it's not level, then the water may stand in the bottom and not drain away properly. Once it's leveled and installed, whether it's a shower stand base or a bathtub base, then you begin connecting the walls. You'll generally want to start with the doors, though you need to follow the manufacturer's directions as far as installation and how to seal the seams, as they may vary by brand. Once all sides are attached, then the top goes on and you can tighten all the fastenings and seal.
The wiring and the plumbing need to be attached according to the manufacturer's directions. You may want to bring in an electrician and a plumber unless you're very experienced. The plumbing, as long as you can use the existing plumbing without adding on, is made easier today with the use of flex lines. Flexible water and drain lines give you leeway in how and where to install your home steam shower.
The wiring for a home steam shower is a bit trickier. The steam shower really needs its own circuit. In fact, if it's a steam shower/Jacuzzi that will draw a lot of power, you may want each part on its own circuit. A GFCI, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, is necessary for safety to keep a person using the home steam shower safe from shocks.
Something you'll also want to be aware of is moisture. An overhead ventilation fan that blows outside like your dryer vent can help pull the excess dampness from the steam shower and help prevent mold, mildews and other water maladies.
When the home steam shower is fully installed, as tempted as you may be, don't use it yet. You need to let it run for 5 to 10 minutes and switch through all the variable and different functions while it's running. This ensures that any manufacturing oils or chemicals that remain in the home steam shower hardware and the water lines are flushed out.
